How do we motivate people for change? Extrinsic motivators ("prods") work in some contexts but they often undermine ("crowd out") intrinsic motivation for doing things & they can backfire disastrously. That's because human behaviour is influenced by underlying norms, cultural contexts & intrinsic motivations that simple rewards and punishments cannot address. Great day today at the Whole Family Mental Health & Recovery conference in Dublin today. Lots of learning to take home with us, and most importantly the lived experience of families showing the importance of family focused practice in adult mental health.

I am convinced that we must declare a moratorium on all deficit-focused and damage-centered research. This research pathologises and is often used to enforce harmful social engineering policies. Researchers focusing solely on problem identification should turn their critical gaze back on themselves and their harmful practices. Researcher, first, do no harm!

Held first session of @UlsterUni short-course on early adversity and developmental trauma for care experienced young people on Tuesday. Was most meaningful experience I've ever had in 25 years in academia. Such courage and resilience. Never underestimate care experienced people.
