Two years ago today I published this article making the case for phone-freee schools. The case is far stronger today, now that so many schools are getting great results, esp. hearing noise and laughter in the hallways again. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…

Just because you have the right to do something, that doesn't make it right. Adultery is legal. Racism is legal. Killing Jews during the holocaust was legal, sheltering them was illegal. Slavery was legal, helping free slaves was illegal. Right and wrong are not determined by legality.

Many people don't try winning at hard things. Because if they tell themselves they didn't try their hardest, they don't feel as let down when they don't succeed.

People sometimes hold on to pain because part of them would rather be right than happy. It becomes part of their identity and they become lost without it. They seek it.

@arthurbrooks The "happiness" from all of them wears off. Money also buys self-confidence and a feeling of success. Whether right or wrong, throughout history money has been a barometer of success.

Can money buy happiness? Yes, but only if you spend it the right way. You can use money to: • Buy stuff • Buy experiences • Buy time • Give it away • Save it Only the last four bring happiness. “Stuff” wears off. But saving money is progress. And progress makes us happy.

If you don’t know how to enjoy life and have fun, you will miss out on living a “full life”. There is one school of thought that believes the key to happiness is detachment and eliminating desire. These people fear being let down so much, they fear being hurt so much, that they miss out on the joys of life. They are paralyzed by fear and pretend it is strength (“you can’t hurt me”); instead of having courage and fortitude, they are cowardly and scared. A person can fear being hurt so much that they never allow themselves to truly love or they’ll self-sabotage their relationships. A person can fear failure so much that they never follow through on that business idea they are excited about. The key to well-being is not avoiding all risks, it’s having resilience and being able to bounce back from misfortune and mistakes.

Happy people focus on four things every single day: 1. Faith or life philosophy: Something transcendent that reminds them how small they are. 2. Family: A mystical, irreplaceable bond. 3. Friendship: Deep, non-transactional love. 4. Work: Where they earn success and serve others. Neglect one, and happiness starts to fade. Nurture all four, and life becomes rich.

What course has the best/your favorite opening 3 hole stretch and why? Mine is Oakmont. Every shot requires thought and execution. 1 had a unique green, 2 is off the charts tee to green and 3 is more than just the famous church pews…you absolutely can’t miss long on 3 green.

Which par 3 do you prefer? The before and after of the epic par 3 13th hole at Lake Merced. The original (left-1923) was designed by Willie Locke and the current (right-1929) is designed by Alister MacKenzie. (Restored by Gil Hanse.) I really like the Locke version. It’s quite penal, but it’s unique and bold. Not as aesthetically pleasing, but stunning nonetheless. Photos and history from @JStewGolf

@putt4dough24 I'm not good enough to need a caddie. I'm a 6 handicap trying to have fun. I can carry my own bag. $150 for someone to read my putts? Double baggers are the worst, waiting around forever. I am fine with Evans scholars and helping kids, but I'd rather not take one if it's an adult

An exchange from a terrible caddie experience I had recently: To my +4 playing partner who shot 67 on a tough course: Player: “So the actual is 178?” Caddie: “No more than 181, hurting wind, can’t be short” Player: “so 178 pin?” Brutal stuff. Just do what the player asks!

@SHistorians In 2014 I would've said Rory. All the talent in the world. Had 4 majors at 25 years old and was dominating. Scheffler will likely win many more majors but not 15. Need to start winning majors in early 20s to have a shot.
