Happy to talk to @jsidman and help sound the alarm about the challenges facing the DC restaurant industry for @washingtonian

Whether these numbers are literally true, people need to understand it's not a binary, it's not restaurants closing or staying afloat - people are taking predatory loans and having to cut workers, profits are going down to unsustainable levels, and a lot of people are in the red.

@jsidman More concisely - countless operators we speak to say they'd never open another restaurant in DC, so while some nationals who don't know the market can be convinced to come, we don't want to lose the local operators who have made DC a great food city.

@jsidman Whether or not 40% is alarmist doesn't mean we shouldn't sound the alarm.  We know the community deeply and we're seeing operators feeling forced to take predatory loans at 50%+ APR and other desperate measures to navigate a landscape where margins are shrinking across the board.

This feels alarmist and likely way overblown. There are plenty of challenges for restaurants right now, but we didn’t even see this many close during Covid.
