The older I get, the more I realise friendship is one of the most misunderstood things in life. We expect too much. We hold on too long. And we forget that some friendships were never meant to be forever. Here is what I have learned. Never have expectations from anyone. Not because people are bad. But because expectations are the fastest way to turn a good relationship into a painful one. Let people show up as they are. Some friendships survive time and distance. The best ones pick up exactly where they left off. No explanation needed. No awkward small talk. Just two people who genuinely care about each other. But not all of them do. I had a friend who went away to study for half a decade. When we reconnected, I assumed we would start where we left off. But every time we met, I was the one making the effort. After 5 or 6 attempts, I realised it was not on me to carry it alone. So I let it go. The truth is, some friendships fade. And that is okay. They were meant for a certain season of your life. And somewhere along the way, without realising it, we have probably done the same to someone else. The friends worth keeping are the ones who show up without being asked. Who let you talk? Who makes you feel heard? Who helps without keeping score? One more thing. Never mix money and friendship. People assume it is your duty. They take it for granted. If you want to help a friend financially, do it with the assumption it is not coming back. That way, you protect both the friendship and your peace of mind. When I was going through one of the hardest periods of my life, I found out who my real friends were. A small group of people checked in on me regularly. Took me out. Distracted me when I needed it most. They did not fix anything. They just showed up. That was enough. Be the kind of friend you needed when you were struggling. That is the only advice worth giving.

I was never a big reader. As a kid, barely a book here and there. As an adult, I fell deep into the self help and business book rabbit hole. Every bestseller. Every framework. Every morning routine backed by neuroscience. Then I realised something. Motivation from a book fades. What has to be done has to be done. No amount of highlights and dog eared pages changes that. So I stopped reading the way I was told to read. I stopped finishing books just because I started them. I stopped reading chapter by chapter when I could jump straight to what I needed. I stopped feeling guilty about putting something down that wasn’t adding value. The Japanese have a word for people like me. Tsundoku. The art of buying books and letting them pile up unread. I have a collection that would make a librarian nervous. And I have made peace with it. Because what makes a good reader is not how many books you finish. It is the ability to call out what is not working for you and move on without guilt. To take what you need and leave the rest. To know that a book serves you, not the other way around. Read what pulls you. Skip what doesn’t. Put it down if it stops giving. The best readers are not the ones who read the most. They are the ones who take reading seriously enough to be honest about what is worth their time.
