It has been almost three years since ChatGPT launch, and for all this time, the noise in the industry has become insane. I decided to take a step back and ask actual US consumers whether they are using ChatGPT for shopping decisions. The reality is pretty well-expected: Google remains the leading source of truth for product discovery and research, and LLM platforms are not even close. Some interesting takeaways from our study: 👉 56.68% of American consumers prefer to start their buying journeys by searching Google. 👉 The main Google competitor for shopping discovery is not ChatGPT. It’s Amazon 👉 39.54% of respondents never used any AI platform for shopping research 👉 ChatGPT is the leading platform for US consumers who use AI Please check out the full study here: smarty.marketing/google-vs-chat… I've said this a lot: Shopping habits are not easy to change. AI may be used a lot, but it looks like it is not replacing traditional search. It is adding new use cases that didn't exist before.

The SEO industry once worried about the fate of Wikipedia; at least now we no longer need to trouble ourselves unnecessarily. The childish and lack of professionalism they show today are well matched by the troubles it has already faced or is likely to face.

@MordyOberstein killing it again. Seriously, when is his Vegas act opening up? :) E.g. Like this quote: "Forum discussion wherever actual humans with a soul and a shred of decency and integrity appreciate Barry Schwartz (not the psychologist - I mean, I guess he’s fine too, whatever)." I wonder if Wikipedia contributors will read this. They should. :) seroundtable.com/wikipedia-dele…

Update: the fake Google Search Console impressions have started to come crashing down. I'm mostly seeing a clear decline within Image Search for the moment (the original surface I was alerted by), with other surfaces still to follow. Here is a timeline of the key events: 1. March 30th, 2026 I shared that there was a clear issue with impressions (and a smaller portion of clicks) that appeared to be unrelated to the disabling of &num=100. 2. April 3rd, 2026 Google recognises that there has been a logging error that has prevented them from accurately reporting on impressions. It has apparently been an ongoing issue since May 13th, 2025. Will take a few weeks to resolve. 3. April 9th, 2026 The first big decline in impressions happens when using the Images search appearance filter in GSC across many properties I have access to (not just US-based data). If you're also seeing a decline in impressions, I would suggest adding an annotation to your GSC dashboard, or within your 3rd party GSC data warehousing tools such as @seogets and @seo_stack. In the example shown, Image Search impressions dropped by around 200K p/day. The difficult aspect here is that Google just finished rolling out the March 2026 Core Update on April 8th – which doesn't appear to be a related impact here. Never a dull day in SEO.

In this week’s NYT piece, Google’s said that the BBC article about self-promoting listicles used “unrealistic searches people wouldn’t actually do.” I have some thoughts about that, and about AIO accuracy overall. Check it out: algorythmic.co/opinions/my-re…

Do News Publishers That Block AI Crawlers Get Cited Less Often by AI? "Using data from Citation Labs’ AI citation-tracking tool, XOFU, we examined 4 million citations from 3,600 prompts in ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews, and AI Mode, across 10 industries." buzzstream.com/blog/news-bloc… via @VincetheNero

I went back to my hometown. No one was talking about AI, there was no anxiety in the air.

JUNE 2028. The S&P is down 38% from its highs. Unemployment just printed 10.2%. Private credit is unraveling. Prime mortgages are cracking. AI didn’t disappoint. It exceeded every expectation. What happened? citriniresearch.com/p/2028gic

github.com/LearyN/crawler… I created a simple tool that tells you whether an IP address is a known good crawler simply by entering it. It supports identifying Googlebot, Bingbot, and GPTbot (three variants). You can also add more IP ranges as a whitelist.
