The Siege of Jadotville began today in 1961, during the Congo Crisis, amid the chaos following the African nation's independence from Belgium. Katanga, a mineral-rich province ruled by rebel leader Moïse Tshombe, attempted to secede from the Congo, seeking to maintain control over the country’s wealth. Tshombe boasted a large army of Katangese Gendarmerie and European mercenaries, all battle hardened veterans of the Algerian War. In nearby Jadotville ‘A’ Company, 35th Battalion of the Irish Army, were deployed as part of a United Nations peacekeeping mission. Led by Commandant Pat Quinlan, they were tasked with maintaining order and protecting civilians in a nation, tearing itself apart. Sensing the growing hostility, Commandant Quinlan ordered his 157 soldiers to dig a 1½ meter deep trench around their base and stockpile supplies. The soldiers were lightly armed and poorly equipped. Unbeknownst to Quinlan, UN forces had seized Katangese positions in the nearby city of Elisabethville, triggering a retaliatory attack on the Irish at Jadotville. The enemy force numbered approximately 4,000. The Irish were catastrophically outgunned and outnumbered but not outsmarted. A company's modest arsenal included water-cooled Vickers machine guns, 60mm mortars, and two Irish-built Ford Mark VI armoured cars. Lieutenant Noel Carey, just 24 years old at the time said, ‘We had antiquated equipment, armoured cars that you could probably shoot arrows through.’ In contrast, the Katangese had a Fouga Magister jet fighter, which bombed the Irish positions at night. Despite the ridiculously one-sided nature of the conflict, ‘A’ Company courageously held their ground for five days. Quinlan’s men inflicted heavy casualties on the attackers, killing approximately 300 mercenaries while suffering no fatalities themselves, though 5 soldiers were wounded. A relief and rescue unit of around 500 Indian, Irish, and Swedish UN troops valiantly attempted to break the siege. Tragically, they were defeated and suffered several fatalities. They were successful in buying the besieged Irish some time. By the 17th of September, the Irish defenders were running out of ammunition, water, and supplies. With no relief in sight and facing further attacks, Quinlan made the difficult decision to surrender to avoid a massacre. Incidentally, Commandant Quinlan's earlier tactics are now taught in military textbooks as the best example of the use of perimeter defence. The Irish soldiers were taken prisoner but treated relatively fairly and held for 5 weeks before being released as part of a UN negotiated prisoner exchange. ‘A’ Company returned home that December, but their brave defence at Jadotville received little recognition at the time. Outrageously, their surrender was seen as a failure by army top brass, and the incident was largely ignored by our government and military. Eventually, combatants and their families and military historians brought the epic engagement into the public zeitgeist. In 2016, the survivors were finally honoured with a Presidential Unit Citation, the first in the history of the Irish Army. The then Minister for Defence Paul Kehoe said “I strongly felt that this was a grievous wrong by successive governments that needed to be put right.” The Siege of Jadotville has since become a symbol of tactical brilliance and extraordinary courage under impossible circumstances. Commandant Quinlan’s leadership and the resilience of his men are now celebrated as a proud moment in Ireland’s peacekeeping military history. Pics credit: Irish Military Archive
