@nationalrailenq This is clearly in breach of the Disability Discrimination Act, as it discriminates against disabled people, many of whom will not know if they are fit to travel until the actual day.

We’re making changes to ticket refunds. From 1 April 2026, some tickets will only be refundable up until 23:59 the day before they’re valid for travel. Take a moment to check what this means for you. Find out more: orlo.uk/FdRpF #refundschange

@AndyRoden1 I'm told it's become far more significant due to current digital ticketing and automated refunds. But it solves the problem by pushing risk back onto honest travellers.

So how do we deal with this? I gather that pressure for this change has come from overly-basic digital ticketing that has left significant scope for fraudulent refunds. But we don't have to solve it by putting honest passengers at risk. There's a better way...

DON'T BUY TRAIN TICKETS IN ADVANCE! On 1 April, govt is quietly changing the National Rail Conditions of Travel. Off-Peak & Anytime tickets become non-refundable after 23:59 the day BEFORE you travel. If you wake up & find your event cancelled, NO REFUNDS, even on £100+ tickets.

@seatsixtyone This sounds like a nightmare for disabled people who, because of their disability, find themsleves unable to travel on the day. I am not a lawyer, but I find the validity of these new rules highly questionable under the Disability Discrimination Act.

This makes fares MORE complex. You assume Off-Peak or Anytime fares are flexible so can cope with any eventuality. Counter-intuitively, if you have to cancel on the day, non-refundable Advance tickets can be moved to a future date, O-P & A tickets can't. What a mess!

In a bid to clamp down on ticket fraud that costs the railways millions each year, the government has quietly changed the rules on claiming refunds for unused train tickets. ianvisits.co.uk/articles/fare-…

@seniormusic @northernassist I had a similar experience yesterday (Manchester Vic to Bradford). Sent to Rochdale on tram, no alternative transport provided and then told to organise and pay for a taxi myself. Complaint and refund request to @northernassist submitted.

The first Starships to Mars will launch in 2 years when the next Earth-Mars transfer window opens. These will be uncrewed to test the reliability of landing intact on Mars. If those landings go well, then the first crewed flights to Mars will be in 4 years. Flight rate will grow exponentially from there, with the goal of building a self-sustaining city in about 20 years. Being multiplanetary will vastly increase the probable lifespan of consciousness, as we will no longer have all our eggs, literally and metabolically, on one planet.
Elon Musk@elonmusk

SpaceX created the first fully reusable rocket stage and, much more importantly, made the reuse economically viable. Making life multiplanetary is fundamentally a cost per ton to Mars problem. It currently costs about a billion dollars per ton of useful payload to the surface of Mars. That needs to be improved to $100k/ton to build a self-sustaining city there, so the technology needs to be 10,000 times better. Extremely difficult, but not impossible.

@TPEassist I have an advance ticket on the 18:24 from Cleethorpes to Stockport, connecting with the last train of the night to Stafford. If the disruption is still ongoing, can I travel on the 17:24 service instead?

@TPEassist I am due to catch the 18:24 from Cleethorpes to Stockport, connecting with the last train of the night to Stafford. If the disruption is still ongoing, it would be helpful to be able to travel on the 17:24 service instead. I have an advance ticket on the 18:24 from Cleethorpes.

⚠️ Due to the fire brigade dealing with an incident near the railway yesterday between Cleethorpes and Grimsby Town fewer trains are able to run. 🕒 Train services running to and from these stations may be delayed. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.
