@MattZeitlin The BBC calculated what the murder rate was on one of the more ludicrous detective shows and it's hilariously high for rural England and yet still well below the US homicide rate bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-…

British crime shows are hilarious because there’s like 30 gun homicides a year

I know what's going on in Iran is much worse but I can't get over "no one making less than 75k/year should pay income taxes"

@KooHo_jin @jwhandley17 cambridge.org/core/journals/… I used this to do it for MPs a couple years ago (I'm sure the methodology has advanced since) but it seemed to perform way worse than the authors' results for American legislators (and the word vector projections seemed much less related to ideology)

@hbjroberts @jwhandley17 my primary goal is to see if constituency characteristics affect the ideal points of MPs (particularly interested if MPs in marginal seats are closer to the points of their primary competitor) and then maybe see how party medians affect frontbench member ideal points

the main thing holding me back from greatness is figuring out how to use text embeddings to get ideal point estimates for UK MPs based on speeches in parliament

@jwhandley17 @KooHo_jin I don't know how you'd systemize it but I feel like you could do a compelling paper about how the extent to which speeches reveal ideal points tells you about party discipline etc

@jwhandley17 I suppose the problem more comes if a sharply rising capital share of income makes democracy more unstable

A lot of the AI-induced economic doom prognostications I see involve the capital share of income rising massively but then appear not to give a single thought to how democratic societies are likely to respond to that

@ROX_Hojin Yes and even when you use the continuous measure itself in a regression it's nonsense to interpret. "$1000 increase in GDP per capita is associated with a 0.2 point increase in democracy" - statements spoken by the utterly deranged
