@thomasforth This is an excellent read. I’m not optimistic ‘we’ have the guts/ vision to make investments if models don’t show obvious return on investment, like ie more runways in London. Plus bad recent record delivering major projects/ bias to near London. But strange times. Who knows.

"But there is one problem with this picture--which is that it doesn't really create many private-sector jobs. Berlin has for the past 20 years had one of the highest unemployment rates in Germany; one of the lowest per capita income among German states....

A while back I relistened to almost all of the past Econtalk episodes and one of my favourites was with Enrico Moretti where he was talking about how Berlin's growth strategy was wrong and it wasn't going to work. That was in 2012. Almost precisely where it starts booming.

Good Morning from Germany, where Berlin’s growth is outpacing that of the country as a whole. The irony: despite its often dysfunctional governance, the capital is less exposed to the pain of deindustrialization b/c it has little heavy industry. Instead, Berlin benefits from tourism & a rising digital economy, both of which remain positive drivers. welt.de/wirtschaft/plu…

If there really is a “silent majority” that is supporting Jews right now, it really would help if you could find a voice - even a whisper. Jews really are petrified at the moment and any support would be so gratefully received. ❤️

@bridges_tom @thomasforth A few of us in Advertising are trying to address this campaignlive.co.uk/article/london…. Lots of interest but hard to action useful change where industry leadership has limited incentive and see little wrong anyway. Any ideas/ pointers/ etc from your experiences that could help?

@thomasforth This attitude that anything in a non-London city (aka “The Sticks”) is “local” / “regional” / “provincial” is so pervasive and prevalent in so many organisations and sectors that many people perpetuate it without even realising. And it holds places, people and careers back.

Which of Sir Paul Nurse's recorded opinions made him a worse choice to lead an independent review of research funding in an era of levelling up? 1/ Everywhere except London is the sticks and can't attract talented young people. 2/ Only London can host national institutions.

@WilliamCB @thomasforth Loved this assessment thanks. Though some concerns regards the reliance on VC as the way out.

Today I describe the enduring influence of Margaret Thatcher on the UK's industrial strategy and argue that we need to change direction. Link in next tweet.

@v_j_freeman Hmmm. I think it's reasonable to raise questions over lack of transparency, potentially unfair competitive advantage & therefore whether conferred tax advantages are appropriate. Especially in context of a budget that targeted commercial sector and disproportionately so SMEs.

The Tory party have received unfair criticism this last few weeks. In the interests of balance,I’ve posted some charts below which show performance in various key areas such as life expectancy, the NHS, trade, immigration and the economy 🧵 #GeneralElection2024

NEW: analysis of millions of books published over the centuries suggests western society is shifting away from a culture of progress, and towards one of caution, worry and risk-aversion. I think this is one of the most important challenges facing us today.

I’m Jewish. My family are Jewish. A large percentage of my friends are Jewish. Let me tell you something, we’ve never felt the fear, hollowness and loneliness we’re all currently experiencing as much as we do now
Heidi Bachram@HeidiBachram

Right in front of police on the streets of London pro-Palestinian protestors can shout for the death of Jews. Right in front of those who are supposed to be the protectors. No wonder British Jews are terrified.
