Early in the COVID-19 pandemic in Malawi, we piloted a new method to detect excess mortality in small areas with limited death registration. It is based on periodic short surveys of perceptions of frequency of funerals. The (promising) results are here: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39471519/

New UN IGME estimates & report on child mortality:
Good progress: 51% decline in U5MR from 2000-2022; Annual # of under-five deaths dropped to 4.9 million in 2022.
Acceleration needed: 35 million children under age 5 will die by 2030 on current trends.

We don't really know, and quick inquiries to relevant people haven't generated any obvious answers. So we're putting this out here for now, and look forward to hearing your hypotheses -- we hope to dig a little deeper in the future.
