In Nazi Germany, some ordinary Germans risked their lives to save Jews. In Gaza after October 7, there are no documented cases of Palestinians trying to save Israeli hostages. This does not mean every Gazan is guilty, and it does not blame all Palestinians everywhere. But Gazan society failed to produce even one clear example of someone stepping up to help the hostages. That bigger picture deserves honest discussion beyond just pointing the finger at Hamas leaders.

A recent meme among Hezbollah-supporting women on social media is interesting. It comes against the backdrop of Hezbollah losing thousands of militiamen in the 2026 war (which followed even greater losses in the 2023-2024 war). A Shia Lebanese intellectual, Ali al-Amin, recounted in a recent interview meeting a man from 'Aita a-Shaab, a border town with Israel, and a Hezbollah stronghold. The man told him that "we've been castrated" to describe the massive loss of men in the town. The meme reads the following: "Every Shia with the resistance needs to marry 4 [women] and have 5 children. After 10 years, we'll become the biggest social base in the country. Note: Except the Shia who belongs to me and thank you." The last sentence is a joking way to refer to the widespread opposition of Muslim women to having their husband marry additional wives. This meme is disturbing but also telling. It is disturbing because it views human life as replaceable and individuals as devoid of of inherent worth - and thus giving birth to "replace" someone who died in war, as if getting a new car after the engine of the old one dies. The joke about opposing polygamy is also telling - they support other men dying on the fronts in huge numbers, but don't want to suffer the consequences of sharing their husband with other women to raise future fighters.
