The past week in the oil market has been anything but ordinary. To understand the true scale of the volatility, we turned to AI-powered analysis using General Index data from the last 12 months. We tasked Darling with analyzing several key oil products following Liberation Day. To accurately compare the magnitude of price movements across different commodities, Darling standardized the daily prices. This allows us to see relative moves and identify truly exceptional events. Darling identified a "Black Swan" event affecting multiple products. Specifically: 1. Propane Far East CFR Swaps experienced the most extreme negative movement, reaching a Z-score of -6.17. 2. Naphtha NWE CIF Cargoes also saw a severe negative impact with a Z-score of -5.09. According to Darling's analysis, these dramatic price drops were triggered by Chinese retaliatory tariffs on U.S. propane and a broader reduction in global demand for petroleum products amidst ongoing trade tensions and economic uncertainty. Using @LSEGplc Point Connect subscription, Darling can be readily deployed within your company's ringfenced environment, helping you test and discover relationships between commodities that you may not have known existed. In this week's question we want to look at the relationship between Saudi crude exports and Saudi LPG exports. Could tracking crude exports help us to determine LPG exports? Darling's analysis from March 2022 to February 2025 reveals that the 45-day moving average yields the highest correlation coefficient of 0.580 between the two products, indicating a moderate positive relationship in their longer-term export trends despite significant differences in volume scale (crude oil exports being substantially larger). It highlights the impact of Fog Days and their recent recovery in the US Gulf, observed earlier this month, and combines this data with a second study using live AIS data to predict a decline in arrivals from the Pacific to the Far East during the first half of March, coinciding with the earlier drop in exports.
