In 2025, The Lions defense played the most base defense (3 LBS) and the least amount of nickel. (data via SumerSports) Base (4-3): 62.6% of defensive plays were in base. (1st in the NFL) Total EPA in Base: -12.28 EPA Per Play: -0.019 Nickel: 33.8% of defensive plays were in nickel (32nd in the NFL) Total EPA in Nickel: -12.99 EPA Per Play: -0.037 Given the injuries to the safeties, I can understand playing base more than Nickel to an extent, but the numbers show how much more effective Nickel is for this team. All the personnel moved this offseason and Shepp’s comments lead me to believe more Nickel will be played and the philosophy may shift in general.

Hey Dan What if i told you, MLF opened the playbook and "Let Love play without training wheels" the first 8 games of his 2nd season starting. The results? 50 passes a game on avg. Love cooked up League Leading INTs at 1.5 INT/game I think MLF knows what he has and that's why the EPA for him is inflated because it's a PURPOSELY small sample size
