The ideal form of the binocular "g" is the open-bottom; the closed one is topologically alien to the rest of the alphabet (especially jarring when it's doubled, which is common). And an open one can keep the "s" company.

@DaytonaMess It's not conventional. Some people (poor designers :-) think it never looks right. Back when I was making Patria, I knew I wanted it but couldn't get it to work, then Roy Preston (who became a victim of Dutch protectionism BTW...) suggested looking at Zapf International's:
