I have so many British friends and they’re so loveable, but one thing I’ve observed over the years is that they’re not aware of so many things.
Firstly, they’re not aware that an immigrant pays up to £5,000 for visa and IHS fees, and if it’s a family of 4, that’s an estimated £20,000, I told my white friend the other day and she couldn’t believe it. The media won’t tell you this, I promise you.
She’s above 30 and she’s unaware of this, and she’s a good representation of what the british public looks like.
I told her £800+ goes out of my account for tax, N.I and pension but many British people think immigrants are parasites.
I also told my friend I am not entitled to a single benefit. Zero benefit. I mean, I couldn’t work for 10 months to a year, called my council to inform them of this, asked them if they could pause the council tax or give some discount as I wasn’t working, guess what? They even sent me court letter lol.
I was told I’m not entitled to council benefits. This is me who couldn’t work due to some delays not caused by me. Priori to this time, I’ve never missed a payment even when I’m not working.
My friend was in awe because she lives in a council house, enjoys so many benefits, but yeah, immigrants are the problems.
To respond to this ignorant person, In Nigeria, English is the first language just in case you don’t know. In fact, if you meet 10 Nigerians in a day, I bet you, half of them have a masters degree and maybe 8 with a bachelors degree, this is to tell you how educated we are. Fun Fact: If we both take an English test now, there’s an 85% chance I’ll score higher than you.
The media and tv stations don’t tell you loads of things and what these immigrants contribute to the society. I was at a football game the other day and 80% of stewards/security were non-English. You’d hardly see immigrants who don’t work, in the cold, in the rain, in the snow, they’re working , and consequently, tax being deducted from their wages which goes into the system, and they get ZERO benefits.
They’re not the problem ffs.

@nonsnose Yep I totally get what you’re saying - you’re right that it is frustrating.
Also wanted to add that I’ve enjoyed hearing and learning bits of Scots. One doesn’t need a high IELTS level of English to fit in, thrive here and be part of the community. I hope Labour realises that.
English

@helloodominique I don’t disagree. I think IELTS is daft and used more as a xenophobic tool to assess ‘worthiness’ which I think is vile
I was more just pointing out that ‘youse’ and ‘would of’ aren’t the same when one is correct in Scotland and the other is the most frustrating error lmao
English

@nonsnose thing and IELTS costing thousands is silly when there’s immigrants like me who are living in places in the UK where IELTS standards of speech and writing are not the norm, and the racist/classist IELTS standards would definitely say I was wrong if I used “youse” in the exam.
English

@nonsnose 💯- I didn’t mean to say ‘yous’ is incorrect in itself, I’m aware Scots is its own language and it is correct to use it in that sense
My point was that we were not being tested in Scots for IELTS - despite me intending to live in Scotland. So this whole ‘English requirement’

"This Is My Name" is a one-woman show that centers on Filipino writer and feminist, Señora Maria del Rosario Gil y Montes de Sanchez, a figure during the Spanish era in the Philippines. It depicts a story of love and defiance through poetry and songs. (2/3)
