It's gonna take a little time to shake out where Threads will fall in the rankings of post-Twitter alternatives, but this much is true right now: their initial rollout is definitely a success.

I am alarmed by today's announcement from the @MBTA that Green Line service to Union Square station will shut down for 42 days, from July 18 through August 28. I do understand this is happening because @MassDOT needs to make repairs to the Squires Bridge, which runs over both the Green Line tracks and the Grand Junction track by Twin Cities Plaza, part of the McGrath Highway. There is no doubt this bridge structure is in need of serious repair, due to its deteriorating steel beams, and the presence of electrified trolly equipment conflicts with this needed repair work. It's also worth noting the entire McGrath Highway is in the process of a resurfacing project that will also bring protected bike lanes and other roadway improvements in the near-to-medium term. Medium-to-longer term, we are working to advance the Grounding McGrath project that will transform the larger highway into a green, urban boulevard. The Squires Bridge itself is expected to remain because of the railroad tracks — but the much larger McCarthy Overpass will be torn down someday in favor of an at-grade boulevard. All that said, I am still very concerned about what today's announcement means for my Somerville and Cambridge constituents later this summer. There needs to be better signage informing riders about what's happening at Union Square station, and better communication generally. Yesterday, at the ribbon-cutting for the Community Path Extension, I conveyed this directly to General Manager Eng. I told him, "let us know what's going on as soon as possible. Tell us how bad it is and how bad it's gonna be. Don't hold back. I am fighting to get you the resources you need to fix and upgrade everything." Today, I also spoke with top staff at the MBTA and let them know we are very concerned about the impacts this closure will have on our community. The T is suggesting riders use the 86 bus or the 91 bus to get to East Somerville station, which will still be open for Green Line Service. Or take the 87 to Lechmere, they say. While many bus routes had their summer schedules reduced (to actually reflect their spring headways, given the persistent and ongoing bus driver shortage), the T assured me today that the 91 bus hasn't seen any changes in the new summer schedule. More from the T on these and other service changes this summer: mbta.com/news/2023-06-2… Unfortunately, Green Line service will also shut down between North Station and Government Center station between July 29 and August 9 to allow for continued work on HYM's redevelopment project at the Government Center Garage. As an aside, the impact of this commercial development project on Orange and Green Line riders has been absolutely outrageous and scandalous — but if it's any consolation, at least this latest inconvenience lines up with the Squires Bridge work. This afternoon, I also spoke with @SenJehlen, and tomorrow she and I, and the rest of our Somerville delegation will meet with Mayor Ballantyne, where I am sure we will discuss this further. I will continue pushing to ensure our constituents are provided with appropriate accommodations. The T is assuring everyone that the 86, 87, and 91 busses will have sufficient capacity to accommodate would-be Green Line riders. I do not automatically accept that assertion and will continue advocating for our community. Please email me directly with questions, concerns, or thoughts as we continue to respond to today's concerning news. There's more about this here via the @BostonGlobe: bostonglobe.com/2023/06/29/met…

I asked the driver at Haymarket to confirm this was a Union Sq train, because the platform sign said Med/Tufts. He confirmed and announced it over loudspeaker. But DID NOT DRIVE THE TRAIN TO UNION. Transit too slow already + now will also leave you stranded. @MBTA @universalhub

@MBTA Wait 15 minutes to board a train back to Lechmere and then wait again for a real train out to Union Square? On reduced speeds? No, I rebundled and walked to my final destination because walking is now faster that taking the train.
