Today has felt like a very medieval day: ‘And behold, on the day after Ash Wednesday the King did send officers to take his brother in charge, and upon Holy Island a wondrous prodigy, a rock with the teeth of a man, etc.’ bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Oei @hendrikspiering.

Trump's win over Harris in the popular vote keeps shrinking and shrinking. Now he has only 49.85 over her 48.27, so a difference of only 1.58, according to the Cook Political Report's update today. Not a majority, only a plurality. Not a landslide, not a mandate.

The first known use of the word ‘tween’ to describe an age category was by JRR Tolkien, only in his case it was for a hobbit between the ages of 20 and 33.

In coming days everyone doing a postmortem to explain why Harris lost, what she did wrong, etc., keep in mind that Trump ran a winning campaign; I.e., it’s not so much she lost than he won. Analogy: Yankees made errors but the Dodgers outplayed them in World Series. The better candidate/team won. And avoid deep-root causism: Trump won because Americans are racists; Harris lost because voters are misogynists Those are losing side rationalizations. Also watch out for single causes: crime, abortion, immigration, inflation, wokeness, etc., are all factors. But be careful of overdetermined causal theories: not all factors matter, or matter equally.

Just a reminder of how many of the very people persecuted by the Nazis helped defend Germany in the previous war(s). AND another reminder that the Nazis virulent racism hurt their country rather than helped it (bet they would have liked to have all those Einstein types working for them, and not against them too, eh?).
