@EU_Commission @vestager What if all digital cameras had a background, high-speed, wireless way to interact with a phone - would have slowed the decline of standalone cameras dramatically over the last decade. Big difference between forced interoperability and "we want to make this amazing" though.

Apple must provide free and effective interoperability to third-party developers and businesses with hardware and software features controlled by iOS and iPadOS. Today, we've initiated two specification proceedings to assist Apple in complying with its interoperability obligations under the Digital Markets Act. Press release: europa.eu/!wKPpFH

@joshu @droqen @lorna Most people prefer the screen to match ambient lighting, so it could be more comfortable if that’s how your room looks. OTOH, many good reasons to let lots of daylight in during the day as well.

yesterday morning or so i changed flux manually to 2300K: Dim Incandescent. i forgot to turn it off, so my screen was orange all day and all this morning. but there’s something physiologically really nice about having an oranged screen even during the day time.

@Jonathan_Blow Just do mW for the package already. Percent is nonsense with variable frequency.

I have an issue with the way Task Manager reports CPU usage. I am constantly in situations on a laptop where the fans are spinning like mad but Task Manager says the top CPU usage is Chrome using 2% for gmail or whatever. Well, if you have 16 cores, 2% means a process is constantly burning 1/3 of a core, which is a *lot* of computation. But it looks small. (And I didn't find documentation of this, but I *think* that percentage is computed using "logical processors", which is usually double the actual physical processors). So I guess what I take away from this is gmail takes 1/3 of a core now, so it has to be treated as a cancer that is shut down at all times unless I am actively reading email? Or what?

@sreekotay I think the larger question is how much context you have to send up to do "interesting" things - million token context or "analyze my video" stuff that big models are good at. Or do they somehow persist all of this for you in the cloud?

@sreekotay The iMessage solution is to encrypt data for a list of endpoint devices, so it can't be MITM'd. But then, you have to trust the service that tells you the list of secure endpoints (and it could add an evil one someday).

@flyosity It's incredible, though I can't figure out why you need a sin() for a polynomial.

Due to the sunsetting of Biobot's datavis, I recalibrated the wastewater data since Feb 2024 to 100% NWSS. It was already weighted toward NWSS prior to this update, but Biobot data was significantly higher. 🔸154,000 new infections/day 🔸1 in every 217 people currently infected

If you need a lot of RAM or storage, it's really absurd what Apple will charge you. You can get a Framework 13 AMD 7640U for $849, then add 96GB of RAM for $281, 4TB SSD for $313, and be all-in for under $1500. A Macbook Pro with those specs? FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS. Bonkers.

@cmuratori I got the Gateron baby raccoons - despite the name, a huge improvement over stock.

I have officially taken the plunge and bought a Keychron Q3 QMK. I would like to replace the switches, since Gateron Red/Blue/Brown don't really do it for me. Does anyone have switch recommendations? I currently type on Razer Orange switches and I think they feel pretty good. My favorite keyboard of all time were the Amiga hybrid switch keyboards, but nobody makes anything like that any more (Topres don't feel like it to me, although some people think they do I guess).

It's crazy to me that you can buy a Framework 13 with the stellar Ryzen 7 7840U, 32GB RAM, 1TB drive, and spend less than $1,500. This little beast runs the entire test suite for HEY in just 2 minutes, just ~20s slower than my M3 Max that costs more than 2x.

@jdpereira Recent iPhones all have 240hz flicker too. Though not all eyestrain is flicker - minimizing glare can help too. Regarding flicker: It’s mainly the older LED backlights that are free of it. There is a Reddit group if you think you may be affected: reddit.com/r/PWM_Sensitiv…

Quick question: my eyes are getting strained from reading on screens all day, but I don’t want to print papers. Is there any good reader/tablet alternative to an iPad (need color)? The iPad is just giving me huge headaches.

I'm still trying to make sense of the Biobot discrepancy with other data sets. They're the only one that shows this bump, other wastewater and all national hosp metrics still show declines.

@heniek_htw @circadian247 1. We don't usually consider Noell damage in humans because it has only been shown in rats. This has been known since 1966. 2. "10 LEDs" should not be measured using irradiance (only large sources should), and standards have radiance limits for small sources instead...?

Blue & green part of spectrum are responsible for retinal phototoxicity while red part has some protective properties. In order to efficiently protect retina, phototoxicity of polychromatic light should include entire spectrum, not only its content in BL as its generally admitted

GREAT FUN w/ PARTICLE COUNTERS at #AAAR2023: Last week we were lucky to get to test out 3 highly sensitive particle counters on same SAFE box 📦, two condensation 💦 💦 and one optical 🔬: How do they compare? (1/11)
