New research published in #Geology reveals the hidden eruptive history of the Kolumbo submarine volcano and its surprising connection to its famous neighbor, Santorini. 🌋 By analyzing deep-sea sediment cores, the researchers reconstructed ~265,000 years of volcanic activity, identifying: • 19 explosive eruptions from the Kolumbo volcanic system • An average recurrence interval of ~6,000 years • Evidence that the activity of Kolumbo and Santorini may be linked Understanding how nearby volcanoes interact is key to improving hazard forecasts—especially in regions like the Aegean, where volcanic activity and dense populations intersect. This study is gaining attention and has been featured in Eos—read the full study: geosociety.co/Metcalfe_et_al #Volcanology #NaturalHazards

During the 2018-2019 Antarctic summer season, several of our instruments were used to monitor icequakes and the glacial-bed interface. The data demonstrated a more complex interface than originally assumed, allowing for better constraints on ice-dynamics models. #SeismicSaturdays
