En sectores como Portoviejo, Cerro de Hojas y Canoa, se abrieron grietas muy extensas y profundas; algunas alcanzaron hasta 2 m de ancho y se formaron pequeños cráteres de 2 m de profundidad, por los que emanó agua y arena (licuefacciones). Ocurrieron múltiples deslizamientos en cerros y taludes. Levantamientos del terreno de entre 10 y 100 m, formando mesetas de extensión regular. El evento estuvo precedido por dos sismos premonitores (sentido por pocas personas en Quito) y seguido por numerosas réplicas. Se reportó un muerto y varios heridos.
