Belcanto in Lisbon holds two stars and a spot on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. The sandwich on her plate is a Francesinha from Porto, layered with steak, ham, sausage, melted cheese, and a fried egg, sitting in a beer and tomato sauce. The cliffs in her other photos are the Algarve coast, which clocks 3,135 hours of sun a year, one of the brightest spots in mainland Europe. The world has noticed. Portugal hit a record 32.5 million visitors and €30 billion in tourism revenue last year. Tourism is now 21% of Portugal’s GDP and supports 1.2 million jobs, around 23% of all employment in the country. The reason her solo trip works is that safety, English, weather, food, and cost all line up at once. Most European countries are good at one or two of these. Portugal happens to be good at all five.

Processo de extração de areias para a linha do Estoril e Lisboa. Objectivo: Nas décadas de 40 e 50, a areia da Cova do Vapor foi vista como um recurso barato e abundante para grandes obras públicas. O destino principal foram os aterros da Avenida Marginal e o enchimento artificial das praias da Linha (Estoril e Cascais), que já sofriam de falta de areal para o turismo. A "Mina" de Areia: A extração foi feita recorrendo a dragas — incluindo a famosa draga a vapor que terá dado nome ao local. Retiraram-se milhões de metros cúbicos de uma "língua de areia" que se estendia quase até ao Bugio. O Erro de Cálculo: Na altura, não se compreendia (ou ignorou-se) que aquela areia não era estática. Ela funcionava como um tampão de energia e uma reserva que as correntes levavam naturalmente para sul. O Resultado: Ao remover o "armazém", o mar ganhou uma força sem precedentes. A povoação da Cova do Vapor teve de recuar (as casas eram arrastadas por bois) e, mais a sul, a Costa da Caparica perdeu a sua proteção natural, levando à crise de erosão que obrigou à construção dos esporões que vês hoje. Em suma: sacrificou-se a estabilidade da margem sul para "construir" e embelezar a frente ribeirinha e marítima de Lisboa e Cascais. Com a agravante adicional dos milhares de metros cúbicos de areia que foram retirados para a construção da Expo-1998 e da consequente retirada de areias do fundo do estuário do tejo para permitir um melhor tráfego aos navios de grande porte e aos navios de cruzeiro (quais cidades flutuantes). Percebem agora a tentativa desesperada para tentar remediar o que não tem remédio, ao teimarem com as sucessivas "reposições de areia" nas nossas praias?

@amodosque Foi para o aterro de Belém e Algés anos 30-40. Expo 98 não tem nada a ver. As águas que saíam a norte do Bugio e limpavam o canal navegável naturalmente, hoje saem também a sul, perderam força, daí as dragagens obrigatórias, e a areia é usada para compensar as praias da Costa

The West gave Tolkien the Freedom to write the LOTR and then profit on it on the market for us all to enjoy and benefit. Don't forget that. Be careful of biting the hand that feeds- if you bite off too much- you'll take an arm, a breast, and eventually the beating Heart of West if you're not careful. And lose you're freedom to speak. We don't want the wrong resources going into anti-freedom ideology hands: whether it be Sharia law Islam run countries or fascism run ones in China and Russia.
