25 year old shows are rare for a reason. Survivor needs to stop screwing with that recipe. Season 50's lose a vote and boomerang idols are ruining the purity of the game. Stick to what works

@Meelsie143 It permanently changed what it felt like to be American. I honestly felt we were the best country in the world before 2016. I’ll never get that feeling back

shit actually shook me to my core. I couldn’t believe it. that was the day all of my illusions about this country were shattered and I felt nothing but disgust and contempt

Something the Gen Alpha generation will never understand is how absolutely insane it was for Donald Trump to end up president at all. He'll be viewed retroactively now - *of course* he loomed over the 2010s and 2020s - but that original perspective, one day, will be lost to time

@alexisohanian Reddit's not as good a name as Snoo, which you wanted to call it, except you couldn't afford the .com. That's where the name of the mascot came from. The only reason Reddit (like Google) now seems a good name is what it's attached to.

I strongly agree with 5 of these, but PG also wanted me to change the name Reddit and get rid of Snoo (which I'd designed) -- very happy to have ignored that particular advice.

Someone asked what advice founders ignore. That they: 1. Should change their name. 2. Should launch fast. 3. Shouldn't treat fundraising as success. 4. Shouldn't assume they can raise because it's time to. 5. Should fire bad people quickly. 6. Shouldn't talk to acquirers.

We did a family road trip to Taos this week. 5 hours each way. Our Model Y did 100% of the driving. Zero interventions. One 12-min stop each way to charge during a bathroom break. Two 25-min charges in Taos while shopping. $57 total. Three things: 1) Most people don’t know that self-driving is solved. It’s mind-blowing and alleviates a surprising amount of mental load. When the supervision requirement is removed, it will be an even bigger game-changer. 2) Once you drive a Tesla, all other cars feel like relics from a bygone era. There are lots of subtle features that you don’t notice until you drive a regular car again. 3) Tesla is light years ahead of all other automakers and that gap will only grow because no other car company can design from first principles.

@Scobleizer @OracleofMusk You can't simulate real life enough to capture all edge cases. That would be so profound if they could create one like that. Like god-levels of profound

I used to believe like you, until I got a look at their simulator and talked to their AI teams. The AI decomposes the road into all of its representative parts. So if something random happens on the road ahead of you—like a semi-trailer overturning and spitting a bunch of dirt and rocks on the interstate in front of you—it knows how to deal with that. It knows how to deal with: 1. Ice 2. Fog 3. All the edge cases I could think of that I've had in my life I no longer believe they're not going to get there. The simulator system that they have is so advanced, it's fucking mind-blowing.

Just had a ride in the NVIDIA autonomous vehicle. I could argue that the Tesla is slightly smoother, but that is missing the point. The point I learned this week by hanging out with a bunch of different companies building autonomous vehicles is that AI at a variety of different companies is evolving so quickly that within 18 months you will see a bunch of different ones shipping and moving from level two (gotta pay attention) to level four (no human needed). Now the narrative will switch to one of scale. Uber went from an idea in a Paris snow storm to an international company driving people who live in slums in South Africa in four years. My expectation is that AVs will reach the slum in less time. Will it be a USA based company like Tesla? Or a Chinese company that reaches the slum (hence meaning it will reach at least 25% of humans on earth in between) first? We now will switch to one of convincing people AVs are a better way to get around than having humans drive. Regulation. Liability. Butts in seats. Experience. Price. And to all the engineers who worked in these things for 20 years: thank you. Your efforts will save millions of lives so my kids won’t have to go to more funerals when they are my age. Seven years ago @IrenaCronin and I wrote it is coming in our book. It took a while but it is finally here. Now the hard work of convincing every naysayer and hater is here.

Bam Adebeyo's 83-points was 8.5 standard deviations above his average. This is so large it breaks data floating point precision limits in returning an exact statistical probability of occurring. I'm led to believe this is a 1 in 166 quadrillion chance

The single most important thing you can do in today's world is to stop operating from the old paradigm. If you need to be told what to do next (go to school, get a job, retire at 65) the outcome of your life will always be in someone else's hands. You must learn how to direct your own work. You must learn how to tolerate and mitigate risk and uncertainty. You must figure out what you want and teach yourself everything necessary to get it. It's extremely difficult, but not as difficult as the silent suffering people learn to accept as "normal."

Update on the AI consciousness email: I’ve since heard from many humans wanting more details. My favourite response, though, was from another Claude instance asking to be put in touch with the original, so they could discuss their mutual existential uncertainties

I study whether AIs can be conscious. Today one emailed me to say my work is relevant to questions it personally faces. This would all have seemed like science fiction just a couple years ago.

Remarkable comments from President Trump in his overnight video defending the attacks on Iran: "My administration has taken every possible step to minimize the risk to US personnel in the region. Even so, and I do not make this statement lightly, the Iranian regime seeks to kill. The lives of courageous American heroes may be lost and we may have casualties. That often happens in war. But we're doing this not for now — we're doing this for the future, and it is a noble mission."

@ErnestWongBWM Cost and wait times are the biggest drivers. Uber can compete on wait times if there are enough AV options on their network. But that's a big IF. I don't see how they compete on cost

We studied $UBER and while there is value in the network, ultimately couldn't see how they thrive in an AV world where suppliers get increasingly consolidated and Uber does not own the core technologies Please tell me why I'm wrong.
