FIFA are supposed to suspend countries whose politicians interfere in how the World Cup is managed. Go for it Belgium. Take legal action Court of Arbitration in Sport, Switzerland, and US courts all at the same time. Do it for the game.

@hfdaggie @TSN_Sports Using VAR for a potential straight red card is literally what VAR is for under FIFA protocol. It's not illegal. But even if the call was flawed, you don't fix it by discarding the tournament rulebook via political pressure. Two wrongs don't make a right in sporting regulations.

UEFA has released a statement expressing disbelief at FIFA's decision to suspend Folarin Balogun's red card ban in the Round of 16, saying that it "crossed a red line." #FIFAWorldCup

@RedWavePress Sunny Hostin, what the fuck “communities” are you going into? You aren’t setting foot outside of your Hollywood bullshit circle and you damn sure aren’t “walking” anywhere. Stop with your inflammatory rhetoric, cash your million dollar checks while the rest of us work and STFU

PATHETIC: The View’s Sunny Hostin: “There are times when I walk into a community and I see American flags all over the community and I suddenly feel unsafe because there is a section of this country that has co-opted the American flag and they equate being an American or an American flag with white supremacy. And that should never be ever the symbol of white supremacy.” If you hate this country THEN LEAVE!

@steve_604 @JJWatt The rules of the game also state you can’t use VAR to issue a red card, which is exactly what happened. So in the end, this is all a non-issue.

@JJWatt Really. Country over the rules of the game? Common JJ. This is cheating in the worst way.Totally political.I guess NFL rules don’t matter. You can just get the team Roger likes most and have them win. It ruins all the hard work these guys put in. Makes them all part of a scandal

@hfdaggie @TSN_Sports Even if you think the red was harsh or the VAR process was flawed, you're missing the point. If it was an illegal call, the federation should have appealed it through the proper post-match review process. Instead, FIFA just bypassed the automatic ban entirely.

@Santana24s @TSN_Sports Got a red based on VAR review…which is not allowed. I’m def not saying that I agree HOW we got here, but the fact it wasn’t a red card play to begin with and the red was issued illegally, the result is the same.

@hfdaggie @TSN_Sports The main difference is rule application. Pre tournament qualifier red cards can be deferred to probation under Article 27. But Balogun got a straight red during the tournament, requiring an automatic ban. FIFA applied that qualifier loophole mid competition instead.

UEFA said that FIFA, by making an exception with Balogun and doing so in the middle of the World Cup, has put the integrity of the game "at stake" and set a precedent. "Football, like any other sports, relies on rules, which are the basis for fair, honest and transparent competition," the UEFA statement added. "Sometimes rules are open to interpretation. In this case not. A minimum automatic suspension of one match following a red card is not a discretionary option and does not require the decision of a competent body to be enacted.”
