California's minimum wage increase raised wages 8%, fast food prices 3–4%, and caused employment declines in fast food of 2–4%. In other breaking news, pit bull bites man
NBER@nberpubs

California’s $20 fast-food minimum wage raised restaurant prices approximately 3–4 percent. Other prices including food-at-home exhibit no differential movement, pointing to wage-driven pass-through, from @jeffreypclemens, Olivia Edwards, Jonathan Meer, and Joshua D. Nguyen nber.org/papers/w34990

Hilarious to watch tariff advocates like Oren lower the bar from "tariffs will bring back manufacturing jobs" to "tariffs will cause us to lose manufacturing jobs at a slower rate!" Anywho, it's obvious when you look at *all* blue-collar employment that tariffs are killing jobs

@LHSummers @paulkrugman @AdamPosen @Markzandi @Noahpinion @scottlincicome @CatoInstitute @Chris_Griz @commonplc 8/ In fact, manufacturing employment _had_ been in steady decline. Since Liberation Day, that decline has slowed dramatically. Add in job openings for a measure of potential employment, and the turnaround is even starker. This is how the early stages of reindustrialization look.

@oren_cass You're absolutely pathetic. Manufacturing employment is down, factory building has slowed, native-born unemployment is up, hiring is at the lowest level in a decade, and instead of questioning why your tariff policies aren't working, you're shadowboxing a caricature of economists

Judge Leon, who was nominated by President George W. Bush, wrote, “I have concluded that the National Trust is likely to succeed on the merits because no statute comes close to giving the President the authority he claims to have.” "The President of the United States is the steward of the White House for future generations of First Families. He is not, however, the owner!”

BREAKING: A federal judge blocked Donald Trump from moving ahead with construction of the new WH ballroom. District Court Judge Richard Leon, in his order, barred Trump administration officials “from taking any action in furtherance of the physical development of the proposed ballroom at the former site of the East Wing of the White House.”

The most successful air-naval campaign against Iran in history. Now in a strategic box. Iran not bluffing. Trump is. Kargh Island 400 miles from the Straits. Bad Navy/Marine option. No maneuver. Enemy attacks in seconds from air and sea.

@jasonfurman @paulkrugman Far too many traders focus on the domestic (TACO) choices. In this war, both sides get a chance to decide when the war ends. In the long history of warfare, I know of zero occasions when a quits at a point when the strategic advantage shifts their way. It's low elasticity.

On his terrific Substack @paulkrugman has an analysis of oil price scenarios. The analysis is basic economics. But the market thinks ~50% of the probability mass is below the lowest value in this table, ~20% is above the middle and ~0% is above the top. Why the disconnect?

Ha-Joon Chang compares mainstream economics to Catholicism in the Middle Ages. “Economics today resembles Catholic theology in medieval Europe: a rigid doctrine guarded by a modern priesthood who claim to possess the sole truth. Dissenters are shunned.”

The population will decline nationwide starting in 2030 without immigration, CBO projects. Population decline is actually likely already occurring because net immigration will be negative in 2026.
