Bitcoin is a form of hard money, but it is not the hardest form of hard money in every scenario. It is better suited to environments where social order still exists, but people begin to lose trust in governments, banks, and fiat systems. In that setting, Bitcoin can be used to hedge against inflation, capital controls, and credit debasement, so it is more like hard money for peacetime or partially disordered conditions. But once things move into extreme states such as war, blackouts, internet shutdowns, and damaged infrastructure, whether an asset is “hard” is no longer judged only by whether it resists inflation, but by whether it can complete exchange independently of the system. In that situation, gold and paper cash, because they do not rely on digital networks or electricity, become closer to the most primitive and resilient form of hard money. In other words, Bitcoin is not the ultimate hard money; it is one of the strongest forms of hard money when modern order still partially exists.

I asked my Iranian friend whether people there would choose Bitcoin as a store of value. He told me that when Iran faces blackouts and internet shutdowns, crypto assets are almost as good as nonexistent. So if a safe-haven asset depends on stable electricity and internet access to be usable, can it really function as hard money when it matters most?

🌳 Q3 2025 was Treehouse’s biggest quarter yet.
We launched $TREE through Gaia TGE, expanded tAssets across major protocols and chains, and saw real-world adoption of DOR with institutional integrations.
Here’s everything we built this quarter. 🧵👇
