Before you mow this spring, walk the yard. Cottontail rabbits nest directly in the ground, often in the middle of open grass where you'd never expect it. A lawnmower will destroy a nest in seconds. What you're looking for: a softball-sized depression in the ground, covered with a loose "lid" of dried grass and fur. The mother pulls fur from her own belly to line it and then covers the whole thing to camouflage it. From three feet away, it looks like a patch of dead grass. If you find one, don't move it and don't disturb the babies. Mom is almost never at the nest during the day. Cottontail mothers visit only at dawn and dusk, for a few minutes each, specifically so they don't attract predators. A nest that looks abandoned almost certainly isn't. A few other things worth knowing: The myth that touching baby bunnies will make the mother abandon them is wrong. Your scent is already all over your yard. If a mower uncovers a nest or a dog finds one, put the uninjured babies back and recover them with the fur and grass. Mom will come back. The babies leave the nest for good at three to four weeks old. Mark the date you found the nest, stay out of that strip of yard until then, and you can mow safely after. Cottontails have four to seven litters between spring and fall, so finding one nest in April doesn't mean you're done for the year. Check the yard before every mow through September. Three weeks of careful mowing saves an entire litter. It's one of the easiest wildlife wins your yard gives you all year.
