As part of the 1956 invasion of Egypt. Ben-Gurion wanted to topple Abdel Nasser, take the Sinai, dissolve Jordan, and conquer and settle the south of Lebanon up to the Litani. This was 8 years before the founding of the PLO and a quarter century before Hezbollah existed.

Earlier this week, I broke fast at Rikers Island with New Yorkers in custody, Department of Correction staff, Commissioner Stanley Richards, and Councilmember Yusef Salaam. It was a night that will stay with me for quite some time. People sharing what little they have: breaking bread, offering prayer, making space for one another’s dignity even in the hardest place. In a system too often defined by what it takes, I was reminded of what it means to give—mercy, dignity, and humanity. May we extend that mercy as far as we can. Eid Mubarak to all.

Einat Wilf, a former Labour member of the Knesset, offers what passes, in certain quarters, for strategic insight: the casual suggestion that nuclear devastation might be deployed against Iran to engineer regime change. One pauses not only at the violence of the proposal, but at its familiarity. This is the same voice that has long entertained the mass deportation of Palestinians. It is tempting to dismiss such views as fringe. That would be a mistake. They echo, rather than depart from, a strain of thinking that sits at the centre of Israeli political life.
