Proud advisor moment. Huge congrats to Tanvir Ahmed Khan @takhandipu for winning the ACM SIGARCH/ IEEE TCCA Outstanding Dissertation Award! Looking forward to all the amazing work Tanvir will do at Columbia!

@satnam6502 @headinthebox Every computation can be done manually using pen and paper. The only reason why we are using computers is speed. Performance matters.
English

@headinthebox I *love* computing, it is a religion to me. But not the graphs and charts.
English

I feel a lot of pressure to be a graphs and charts computer scientist, a quantitative computer scientist. I hate it, and I've spent most of my career doing exactly the opposite of what Hennessy and Patterson have espoused. I want to be qualitative computer scientist. I am very happy with the subjective rather than so called objective. I believe there is value in an idea or concept that does not need to be subjected to the Spanish Inquisition of a PLDI paper review. I believe there is truth in beauty, and it does not need to be measured by a Ruler.

A nice writeup about the TPUv4 system based on a talk my colleagues Norm Jouppi and Andy Swing delivered at @hotchipsorg

@takhandipu @bariskasikci Congratulations Tanvir, but even more to Columbia! Looking forward to more joint tears in the future!

📢📢Excited to join @Columbia as a tenure-track assistant professor! Bridging computer architecture, compilers, and operating systems, I enable efficient data center processing. If you're passionate about these domains, let's connect and make an impact together! @EE_ColumbiaSEAS

@djimeneth Aw sorry to miss it. Are these meta apples or real apples?

@EarlenceF @bariskasikci As a reviewer I am annoyed if I put in a lot of efforts into a review, have some concrete questions, and authors do not answer them due to word limits. The time required to read a long rebuttal is negligible compared to reviewing and discussing.
English

@EarlenceF @bariskasikci Weak rebuttals cause rejects which mean another reviewer is reading the whole paper again. It is actually more time efficient to read a long rebuttal.
English

So needlessly callous and officious. Let the reviewers ignore longer rebuttals if they want to.
Why not have some empathy and forgiveness for the grad students that put in all the work?
Adam Bates Yuile@AdamBatesOrg
FYI to those authors out there that like to ignore through the author response length -- @USENIXSecurity PC Chairs are truncating responses so that reviewers don't consider the excess comments.

Proud mentor moment! Yuxuan's (fling.seas.upenn.edu/~zyuxuan/) paper on Online COde Layout OptimizationS (OCOLOS, web.eecs.umich.edu/~takh/papers/z…) to perform profile-guided optimizations on a running process got selected for IEEE Micro Top Picks 2023.

Intel finally released (software.intel.com/sites/default/…) how to use the code prefetch hint instructions for their next-generation processors. Great to see our academic work getting traction in real-world processor design.

BTW, these are BOLT speedups as well. Note 2x speedup on Verilator simulating a RISCV design, where PGO doesn't show much benefit.
