bit.ly/2JEya7h Obesity is a contributor to OA due to increased joint loading, so if we can target weight loss through diet and exercise(which doesn't have to be high-impact), this may help prevent more pts needing surgery/replacements #PT582 #RP

Ai Chi and conventional aquatic therapy are both beneficial to improve balance and decrease falls in older populations and this provides a safer environment for patients who have a fear of falling #PT582 #KR bit.ly/2uCvimB

@dannyspt13 Yeah this study found that pool interventions had better pain reduction than land therapy post-exercise, which makes sense based on the principles of water (buoyancy, warm temp, etc)

@hmsteve04 Thanks Hannah, I like the idea of using aquatic therapy for those patients that have a lot of pain before surgery but still could benefit from more LE strength!

bit.ly/2NcGWvA Pre-op PT can improve pt satisfaction, pain reduction and discharge setting. There is mixed evidence for functional outcomes, but I would support pre-hab to get patients exercising within tolerable levels/use the pool for less joint loading #PT582 #DS

@amkaiserSPT I'm not sure about "grow" this article evaluated the interneuron inhibition in the brain and they hypothesized that mirror therapy would reduce the asymmetry between hemispheres helping to "normalize" the neural communication

@hmsteve04 Hannah! Thanks for sharing a mechanism of action! Do you think that the representation of a phantom limb or hemiparetic limb/side can grow in the primary motor and sensory cortices via mirror therapy?

bit.ly/2zBHTvq Mirror therapy can improve the symmetry of beta desynchronization between hemispheres for patients post-CVA. Similar to treatment for patients with phantom limb syndrome, it can be beneficial to stimulate the primary motor cortices #PT582 #AK

@addybAZ @NAUPT582 Research shows that hydrostatic pressure is helpful in improving pulmonary function in patients, so I think there is reason to believe that there could also be an effect on postural stability and core musculature #gobeavs

@hmsteve04 @NAUPT582 Thanks Hannah, great ideas there! Do you think that aqua therapy can provide any additional benefits to spinal stabilization? You're gona be a stellar PT

@NAUPT582 Pts can participate in exercise in the pool, if accessible, to achieve a fatigued state and provide less load/stress on their joints before engaging in stabilization exercises. A hand cycle or other forms of exercise can also achieve this effect w/o LBP #PT582 #AB

@NAUPT582 Nutrition would be best addressed by a RD, PTs may have some knowledge but not to the extent of optimal care. I think a multidisciplinary approach is the best method for these patients to be treated by experts from different fields bit.ly/2NoYgOU #PT582 #KS

spinal-injury.net/spinal-cord-sh… Spinal shock can occur for 4-6wks after injury, which makes it difficult to diagnosis and understand the extent of damage. It depends on the pt when therapy can start because stabilization and swelling reduction are first priority #PT582 #YM

@hmsteve04 Love the article Hannah! I totally agree, I love the idea of patients encouraging each other and building community. I love seeing you interact with patients weekly during aquatic, you do such a great job :) #PT582

bit.ly/2tz6BqT Aquatic therapy has many benefits and group settings allow for camaraderie and encouragement. Even though pts are at different ability levels, they support one another and celebrate successes together. I'd encourage aquatic PT for most patients #PT582 #TO

@JakehansenS I think group exercise therapy instructed by someone trained/familiar with BIG would help keep patients on track and remind them of the movements and strategies they need to use in every day life

@hmsteve04 Sounds like a very successful program is out there for PT’s to help their patients with PD. What do you think could be done to get patients to stick to HEP’s more successfully?

bit.ly/2MuxmDU LSVT-BIG program improves cognitive functioning and dual tasking by internalizing the commands to affect hypokinesia. They get many reps with the 4x4 tx schedule, but long-term gains may not be as effective if the pt does not keep up HEP #PT582 #JH

@swaddell_ The review stated that some static weight-bearing exercises or low-impact exercises (jogging with stairs, walking, cycling) can also have improvements in BMD. Overall, exercise is the best intervention to improve bone health, muscle mass and balance. #PT582 #SW

bit.ly/2ysebZ8 Combined impact exercises including jumping are the best option to preserve/improve bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. While whole body vibration (WBV) may be a safer alternative, it does not have significant effects on bone. #PT582 #SW

@madeleinetalk No unfortunately most of the research does not support FES for long-term effects. I'm wondering if a combination of FES in the acute care setting and taping afterwards would be beneficial. #PT582

@hmsteve04 #PT582 Great article Hannah! Do you think that E-stem would have longer lasting effects compared to taping? It would be interesting to see how long the reduction in subluxation with e-stem lasts without further treatments.

There is evidence to support the use of functional electrical stimulation as an early intervention to prevent subluxation post-stroke. It would be interesting to see a cost analysis of this treatment versus standard taping methods. bit.ly/2JDgaPp #PT582 #MT

#PT582 #TL bit.ly/2JPr6sC I would reduce reliance on taping due to the increased risk of ACL/MCL injuries from greater valgus impulse at the knee with a taped ankle. Although taping increases stability, there should be a greater focus on therex to produce this effect.
