Very sad news today with the passing of Peter Arnold; aka 'Mr Spitfire', or 'The Spitfire Pope'. With his prodigious knowledge of all things Spitfire, he will be missed internationally. A burial service was held at Workum (Spoordyk) General Cemetery in The Netherlands for three Second World War crew members of Lancaster ED603.
Pilot Officer Charles Sprack DFM, Pilot Officer Arthur Smart DFM, and Pilot Officer Raymond Moore DFM were laid to rest with full military honours 82 years after they were killed in action.

He was killed intercepting a large formation of Do17s and Me110s crossing the channel. His Hurricane was hit by return enemy fire.

His Hurricane was shot down by an Me109.
Rumours persisted that his coffin contained stones. In 1996 his aircraft was evacuated where his remains were found still in the cockpit.
