A significant number of fire engines were observed near the fire zone. The so-called ‘sulphur cards’ are burning – these are storage areas for technical sulphur, which is produced during the purification of gas with a high hydrogen sulphide content. The Astrakhan Gas Processing Plant is one of the largest sulphur producers in the Russian Federation due to the specific nature of the local gas condensate. When sulphur burns, large volumes of toxic sulphur dioxide are produced, which is why the smoke above the facility has a characteristic light colour. This is critical for the gas processing plant, as any disruption to sulphur removal could affect the operation of the gas purification units and the rate of gas condensate processing. It is worth noting the facility’s high level of importance – virtually the entire territory of the Astrakhan gas processing plant is covered by anti-drone nets.
