I've never been sufficiently interested to give him a hearing before. But here he really does not sound like anyone with any serious grasp of economics/finance/etc. He struggles with some basic concepts that would be immediately understood by someone with a fraction of the background he claims. What a strange phenomenon.

Gary doesn't even understand the basics of taxation, like income tax vs inheritance tax or corporate tax vs consumption tax.

@chatswithem He held a Christmas party during the plandemic after the Conservatives locked down the country. Lol. Puppet politicians don't make any major decisions.

@ClassicAdvertz I knew the creative director and copywriter on this - both fabulously talented individuals!

@CuriosityonX Listen to John Martyn Solid Air album then let’s talk about the meaning of life.

@NickDixon Also an exceptionally intelligent man - mistrusted the music business - only ever followed his own path - unpredictable- saw him at the Dominion in tcr in the 80s - shambolic at times but stunning - air full of green smoke - incredible memories as a teenager - love him!

Obviously Martyn wrote ‘Solid Air’ about his friend Nick Drake, but it’s interesting to hear Martyn describe Drake in one interview as almost too ambitious, while in another he says Drake essentially felt he was too good for the world.
I’d always imagined Drake was too introverted and unable to cope with life, but Martyn suggests life was almost beneath him. And it does make sense because Drake has always felt like an otherworldly genius. Somehow ancient and perfect.
If you listen to his mother’s songs, you get more of a sense of why he was so good and where his style came from, but his musical achievements are still stunning.
Martyn was a virtuosic talent, but not quite on Drake’s level, because no one was. Except perhaps Brian Wilson, but he’s so different it’s not a good comparison.
I wonder if there really is such a thing as being too pure for the world. If there is, then Drake would be a strong candidate for that description.

Is this John Martyn’s greatest live performance? Certainly one of his best songs. Though I also love the entire London Conversation album.

@NickDixon I’m watching the BBC 4 documentary about him - the disconnect between the exquisite beauty of his songs and his need to create something despite his brittle personality is quite something!
