Fascinating article on the role of freelancers in the future of work. I've left clients I used to love working with when they started treating me more like staff than a consultant. Managers need to understand the differences in freelancers vs employees. hbr.org/2024/05/highly…

@MattRosoff @TechCrunch Cybersecurity? Christian tech companies (since Easter is close)… Cisco, crypto, Canva etc etc … I’m afraid that if I get my old reporter wheels turning again, I’ll pitch something good and ask for a job 😱🙃

My first post at @techcrunch was about Apple. My second is about bitcoin. My third will have to be about something beginning with the letter "c." I am open to suggestions. In the meantime: tcrn.ch/3TUzOsR

Editing isn’t just about line editing. It’s about story selection, framing, tactical approaches, direction, aligning incentives, motivational speaking, support in tough situations, even career and life counseling. Bad editors are legion.

@PRcarly That or “Can we chat?” The word “chat” is an anxiety trigger now.

If your boss saying, “Do you have a minute?” provokes the kind of existential dread that makes you want to disappear in perpetuity, there’s something dreadfully wrong in that picture. (had a job like that once. Worst experience of my life)

Some personal news. I am beyond thrilled to announce that today is my first day as a venture capital and startup reporter at @TechCrunch . I can’t believe I’ll be working alongside some of the best reporters and editors on the beat.

If you’re at all shocked by Barbie’s losses, you clearly have never been a female founder looking for capital funding.

I'm putting together an online networking event for my graduate journalism students on jobs *outside* journalism (that use journalistic skills). I've got an executive speechwriter, a comms director, and someone in branded content. What else do I need?

@chrissyfarr Trust me, I WISH I had been given credit for all the work that exists in the world without my name attached to it! Alas… ghostwriters don’t get credited way more often than they care to admit! Having worked in both journalism and comms, I WISH credit were given when it was due

@holymolya Not the same thing though. In journalism, they are actually often give Credit. And usually it’s a copy edit here or there, versus writing the entire thing and being responsible for all the sourcing / ideas.

Hot take: If you're a comms person who co-writes a piece with a CEO or other exec, why not put your name on it? It is your intellectual horsepower too. Also, it puts more women (rightfully) in the spotlight.

@chrissyfarr It’s essentially ghostwriting and the name of the game in the industry unfortunately. Also take editors, they could contribute immensely to an article and not have their byline on it, or insert a mistake and then a reporter would be responsible. Happened to me multiple times.

@holymolya It's not a fair trade & unclear to me how anyone could feel ethically okay with that. I had this happen once where someone did a summary of an event and offered to put my name on the byline. I insisted it be theirs. Would never want to take credit for someone else's work.
