Day 9: For centuries, Ghana’s coastline has been a gateway between West Africa and the wider world. Stretching more than 550 kilometres along the Atlantic, the coast has long carried ships trading in gold, cocoa, timber and ideas. Along this shoreline stand quiet sentinels — Ghana’s lighthouses. The iconic Jamestown Lighthouse in Accra, built in the 1930s, has guided ships safely into harbour for generations. Other lighthouses from Cape Coast to Tema have served the same purpose: protecting navigation along one of West Africa’s busiest maritime corridors. These structures are more than navigation tools. They are reminders that Ghana’s relationship with the ocean has always been central to its history — from trade and migration to modern shipping and the blue economy.
