@annepasta3 What a fascinating piece! The bright red skin reminds me of sunburn.

@anna_like_ana I can't stop looking at this. The colors and imagery are definitely evocative of spring and summer, and it's humorous. I'm reminded of Kafka. The figure doesn't look very pleased to be a bug.

I love this piece by Divanshi Moyama because of its colors and interesting themes. Looks like the eyes are even daisies, no? Very summer-like! #ARTH287ArtonInsta

@CWontwt Yes! I like how she uses this to address the objectification of of bodies in the artistic sense.

This quote from Mickalene Thomas shows the level of reality and representation she strives to portray. She focuses on subjects she already has connections with, which I believe allows her to portray deeper themes and messages about these women. #ARTH287

"And I think a lot of times there's this idea or lack of understanding that these are real women. And I want people to feel that sense that it's not just me choosing and plucking a woman from some obscure place and thinking about them, that these are relationships that are built"

I love Mickalene Thomas's subversion of "the gaze" trope in art history, and how she uses it to express Black queer identity. The gaze in her work gives power to the portrait sitter and not the viewer. #arth287

Njideka Akunyili Crosby's work was striking to me because it examines cultural negotiation in post-colonial spaces partially through the lens of familial love. #arth287

@Arth287N Your interpretation of the piece is so insightful! I like how you connected the chaos evoked in the artwork to the unpredictability of summer.

@stephryanweber3 I like how the face on the cover of the magazine replaces the figure's face.

This portrait by Amy Sherald reminds me of summer because of the figure's outfit. I love how the artist uses the pattern of the clothing to convey form, and how the green leaf stands out among the muted neural colors throughout the rest of the composition. #arth287artoninsta

Nasturtium by Jordan Casteel reminds me of my mother's garden, which I used to help tend during the summer. She has a broad knowledge of plants, and I still can't forget her reminding me that nasturtiums have a peppery taste. #arth287artoninsta

@anna_like_ana I love this piece! It's provoking to think about how he was able to manipulate such seemingly rigid materials.

What really intrigued me about this piece by Willie Cole was the careful sculptural aspect of this instrument. It's clear that every (purposefully?) broken piece is meant to make a symmetrical, visually striking overall structure. #ARTH287ArtonInsta

I enjoyed learning about Wiley's approach to portraiture, and how he saw it through the lens of "the choice to reveal. what you reveal, and who gets to do it." It reminded me that no portrait is neutral. The artist is powerful because they show what they want you to see. #arth287

I like how Barkley Hendricks is able to represent the personality or "interior life" of his subjects through depiction of attitude through body language, style, and pose. #arth287

@linden_arth287 I love the mixed media component of this piece. It's evocative of common motifs and styles in 20th century African American quilting such as "improvisation" and asymmetry.

@stephryanweber3 The gore and sketchiness remind me of Goya's Disasters of War series, so I wonder if it could be a reference to that.

I was struck by this painting that Beverly McIver did of her recently deceased father. I like the attention paid to his clasped hands. The tenderness with which it was rendered makes it clear how much love she has for him. #arth287artoninsta instagram.com/p/Cb8lkdHlJ2z/

As the reading pointed out, and when viewing the "From Here I Saw What Happened And I Cried" series, I like how Weems humanizes the sitters in the portraits by changing the way the pictures are framed. #arth287
