Why should #AcademicTwitter care about the #SCOTUS hearing today on #LGBTQ workplace discrimination? Absence of anti-discrimination laws measurably affects the stigma experienced by LGBTQ researchers & few top research institutions are located in states w/such laws: #RiseUpOct8

The Nobel Prize in Physics awarded was very well-deserved. However, next time you hear Vera Rubin didn't win for discovering dark matter bc *insert excuse here*, let today show exactly why she didn't win for discovering one of cosmology's most pressing questions: she was a woman.

Great thread:

@msandstr If a reporter is covering your research, think about what are the take-home messages? What are the points that the public are most interested in? Whilst you might be most proud of a new statistical test or piece of lab equipment used in the work, the public may not be!

This might be the first-ever recording of an octopus changing colors while it's dreaming. 😱🦑 Professor David Scheel recorded the mollusk as it lay in a research tank. Need more evidence octopuses are just aliens living on Earth? Here ya go: trib.al/fjE8ugl

awesome simulation from #NASA shows a black hole. The orange disk around it is made from v hot matter orbiting the black hole. It’s actually flat, but the black hole’s pull literally warps spacetime, which is why it appears to bend at top & bottom
NASA@NASA

Visualize a mind-bending black hole 😱 The gravity of a black hole is so intense, it distorts its surroundings like a carnival mirror. Simulations help us see what Einstein meant when he said gravity warps the fabric of space & time. Get sucked in: go.nasa.gov/2lMiqJz
