In August the Home Office introduced a Zombie Knife amnesty. They agreed to pay £10 per knife.
They expected that 472 Zombie Knives would be surrendered.
Instead, one wholesaler alone has surrendered 35,000 blades.

The last Trump Presidency wanted Huawei banned in the West. The UK regarded Huawei as a manageable risk (so did Europe), partly because Huawei used US-made chips. The US tried & failed to browbeat UK. The US banned Huawei access to US-made chips, deliberately making it insecure.

It is a good thing for the UK to have its own foreign policy on China but we should not over-estimate the elasticity of our divergence from the US. We thought we could take a different line to the US on Huawei. The US made sure we could not.

I don't wish to sound too hyperbolic or reactionary but Stephen Fry et al's intervention on Tube 5G seems to capture something about British NIMBYism / degrowth. No parent wants their kids to be spending all their time on smartphones, but restricting 5G on the Tube is one of the dumbest ways of achieving that. Mobile Internet coverage is a basic provision for an advanced economy, London is already behind and @SadiqKhan is right to pursue it. We should celebrate building things! (And parents can always just not give their children smartphones)

Significant update from the CMA regarding Vodafone/Three in the UK. I suspect we’re seeing it in recognition of the significant commitments they’ve managed to get from the merging parties to address their earlier concerns. The merger now edges closer to completion in December.
