America lost $100B-$135B to unemployment fraud during COVID according to a recent GAO study. Massive loss for taxpayers. In Mississippi, my team found the state lost around $500 million to the same unemployment fraud. Many of the people who stole live out of the state or even country. Most of that money will never be recovered. Bottom line: government is terrible at propping up the economy. In 2008 during the financial crisis the federal government gave out massive sums to big companies with highly paid executives during the bailout. In 2020 the federal government tried to spend the money on everyday citizens who were hurting—only to see the money taken by crooks. These are important lessons to remember the next time you hear the federal government discuss a massive bailout.
