Thank you. Two words people remember to say today. Most days they move past without much thought. Every so often you watch them land. Something shifts in the room. The other person eases. You feel a small release in your chest at the moment you speak. That release is the part we overlook. Gratitude looks like a social gesture, but the real movement happens inside. The action points outward. The change points inward. It is one of the rare signals that travels both ways at once. It reaches the other person and it reaches the quieter part of you. Say it often enough and a pattern forms. Your attention starts noticing things it used to skip. The world stays the same. What shifts is the part of your mind that finally starts catching what it used to miss. Researchers write about this from different angles. They describe shifts in baseline mood or changes in how the body prepares for the day. Underneath all of that is something simple. The nervous system settles for a moment. The body loosens its grip. With repetition, that moment becomes easier to access. A temporary state becomes part of how you operate. People call gratitude a practice. It is also a way of tuning your mind. It gives you access to parts of your mind that stay locked when you are tense. When your mind is not bracing for what might go wrong, you think with more clarity and move with more intention. That is why these two words matter. These words matter for reasons that have nothing to do with tradition or timing. They create a brief pause where your internal world rearranges itself. If you use that pause with care, the rearrangement stays. It also changes the space between people. Hidden work becomes visible. Trust becomes easier to build. Teams start speaking more honestly because acknowledgment opens the room. The environment steadies itself. Over time, gratitude becomes a quiet form of clarity. It keeps your attention from collapsing inward. It gives you access to the part of yourself that stays present when things get hard. Two words. A moment of recognition. A doorway you can walk through any time you need to return to yourself.

@bryan_johnson 5g is a big dose all at once. Another option is incrementally dose every 30 min - hr. Extends the journey but may help especially if you end up nauseous on the come up and puke it up. Enjoy the ride. You won't die. You are loved.

After 12+ years, 25 batches, and the privilege of advising >1,000+ startups, I’m transitioning to Partner Emeritus at Y Combinator. YC changed my life. I’m grateful to the thousands of founders who trusted me with their journeys, my fellow YC partners and teammates, and to Paul, Jessica, Trevor, and Robert for creating this extraordinary institution. Standard Capital is name of the AI-native Series A firm I’m co-founding with two of my favorite people: Paul Buchheit, my longtime colleague at YC, and Bryan Berg, the CTO of my previous startups. AI is reshaping every aspect of our world. We aim to embed AI in every part of our business and back the AI disruptors of tomorrow. Follow us at @Standard_Cap, you’ll be hearing more from us soon!

If you’re a first-time founder, this is what you signed up for. The investor who never replies. The customer who churns without warning. The teammate who quits two weeks before launch. The launch that flops. The week where nothing moves. And the question that creeps in quietly: “Am I even good at this?” Nobody prepares you for that part. They talk about product-market fit, go-to-market, fundraising. But they don’t tell you what happens when all of it stalls at once. And you’re still the one who has to figure it out. Here’s the truth: You’re not building a startup. You’re building the version of you that can survive one. That means making decisions with half the data. Keeping morale up when yours is gone. Holding the line when everything feels shaky. It’s not about being fearless. It’s about showing up when you’re full of doubt. It’s not about having a plan. It’s about moving when the plan falls apart. First-time founder doesn’t mean first-time pressure. It means first-time accountability when it’s all on you. And still you keep going. That’s what makes you real. Not traction. Not funding. Not followers. Just the ability to stay in it. Long enough to become undeniable.

Five lessons I’ve learned from almost 20 years in startups: 1. When important people tell you something that is not true - you don’t have to believe them. 2. Being successful doesn’t default make you a polymath. 3. It’s easier for rich/successful/important people to lie (and believe their own lies) cause few are motivated to tell them the truth to their faces. 4. Faith, grit, and honestly defeat money all the time. 5. It’s rare you are forced to give up on your startup. It’s more common that you convince yourself you’ve lost (when in all honestly, the odds of success didn’t change much between your start date and your end date). And a bonus one: your reputation is not what people say to your face - it’s what people say behind your back.
