I got reminded of when I met @benbendc in Melbourne during my PhD a few years back. Coincidentally, I pivoted my PhD focus to a Human-Centred AI topic earlier that year, so it was very timely indeed!

What a fun idea to rerun the debate. I agree that interface agents aren’t going anywhere…. They are dead in the ground. Cameras, navigation, e-commerce, texting, music players, games, etc. are all direct manipulation. :-) @hcil_umd @iSchoolUMD @umdcs @humancenteredai

Today my class re-acted the Direct Manipulation vs. Interface Agents debate: 4 students took @benbendc's side, 15 argued for @PattieMaes & 13 stood with @erichorvitz. Looks like interface agents aren't going anywhere; question is if direct manipulation will still be there with us
