The most dangerous question a developer can ask is, “Wouldn’t it be cool if…?” It may sound like a great idea in your head, but games are supposed to be fun first and foremost. Both Left Alive and The Forever Winter explored similar concepts, yet neither achieved major success If you make a game with cool mechs fighting each other, but players only get to play as inconsequential infantry, they’ll simply interpret it as you telling them, “You don’t get to do any of the cool stuff because we hate you,” even if that’s not the original intention Players don’t judge a game by how cool and revolutionary the devs think their idea is, they judge it based on how much fun they are having when they play the game. If the fantasy isn’t something they can meaningfully engage with, the concept alone won’t carry the game
