Personally, I would have restrained the person and called the cops. Wait for the officials to get there, tell them what happened, and let them figure out what they want to do. Is it ok if he struck the person vandalizing? In the old days, it wasn't uncommon for someone to hit another person for messing/damaging their property. It's a way of saying, "Don't you try that crap again! I'm teaching you a lesson. Don't do it to someone else's property. Now, get out of here, and don't turn back around." Do I think it's right? I think it's 50/50. Yes and no. I think knocking out the person went too far. If he had punched the person below the ribs, which is the midsection, it would have got the point across without causing possible brain damage. The bad thing is, by doing that, it's committing a crime (physical assault). So either you call the cops, maintain the person who is vandalizing property, and let the cards fall where they fall, or roll the dice, commit a crime, and teach the person a quick lesson. Note: By stating this, I'm not telling anyone to assault someone. It's against the law, and it is never a good idea to assault anyone because there are repercussions for your actions.
