in 2021, when i stepped back from leading engineering for all of @coinbase's consumer products, i knew i wanted to "bring coinbase onchain" but i didn't know what that actually mean. the first thing i pitched to the coinbase exec team was to give me $1B and 60 employees so I could turn coinbase into a DAO (this was peak 2021 bull market). they gently and kindly told me that wasn't going to happen. i then spent the next year iterating through 3 different product ideas of what i thought that could look like with a small team, doing biweekly readouts to the exec team on our progress. it was incredibly stressful and none of them worked. after a year of trying and failing, we collectively made the decision to shut the team down and have me and the other folks go find a way to contribute elsewhere in the business. as we shut the team down, we had a month transitionary period that we called "onchain october" where we were both hacking and trying to figure out where we would go next. it was during that month, that @michaeldehoog said "i feel like the biggest takeaway from the last year is that we need a chain to build all these products on." i agreed, we shipped the first internal testnet a week later (lovingly called "basenet"), and the rest is history.
