It gets harder to win every year at Iowa State. The Big 12 brings in less money for his staff and roster than programs he’s asked to compete against — including Iowa down the road and Texas Tech and BYU in his own league. And still he’s won 19 games the past two years before this bowl season. Look at Oklahoma State, which has faced similar difficulties and won two FBS games in two years. There was a time, I believe, when Campbell would have left only for Notre Dame or Ohio State. But that time passed with the monetization of rosters. He almost went to USC in 2021. This is a way, way better fit.

I spent a morning in Ames with Matt Campbell nine years ago, when he was the youngest power-conference head coach in college football. Watched him write out practice plans by hand four days before his Cyclones beat Patrick Mahomes and Texas Tech by 56 points. I didn’t need to see that game or spend that time in his office to know that Campbell was a good coach. But what I saw made clear that his style would work at Iowa State — or at Penn State, where a blue collar is required and relentless work is the expectation. Don’t care if he was Pat Kraft’s 10th choice or his first. Campbell will make the Big Ten better.
