i learned this when i was in middle school. literally chanced upon a random article on the internet and tested it myself when writing journals or "thinking out loud."
same way i learned too when i found out to start reframing "sorrys" into "thank yous"

Two individually marked bumble bees are shown in a tunnel used for affective contagion experiments.
Bees that briefly interacted with conspecifics in a positive affective state in this tunnel later showed more optimistic responses to ambiguous flowers.
The discovery shows that even insects can share affective states, tracing the roots of affect and social cognition deep into evolution.

I kind of suspect it's consciousness all the way down.
A worker bee or a chicken certainly doesn't have your range or magnitude of cognition but it probably exists in its own mental reality that can't be compared to a mere automation.
