@GunnisonCap Glad to hear it wasn’t a wider breach! This is why I always navigate to any website manually when I receive an email like this, which is of course much less convenient, but a little paranoia doesn’t hurt. Can’t trust any email with such links 😅

A breakdown of how I lost control of my X account, and crucially where security was found lacking. First of all, it took around 18hrs for me to work out how the breach event occurred. I got notification by email of a new login to my account and within 30mins took steps to update the password to resolve this. Instead I found myself locked out of the account on all devices, and it posting obvious phishing / scam links about an airdrop. For some time I was very concerned because at Chintai we use LastPass with 34char ultra secure passwords, different for all accounts, and further access to LastPass is secured via a Yubikey for new logins. Therefore our major concern internally was some sort of wider breach to have somehow got the LastPass password, which is by definition unbreakable from a brute force hacking perspective. The following morning I went back to the original email, which I include a screenshot of, and clicked the change password link again. Unlike the first time 12hrs earlier, the browser pulled up a warning about the domain that did not show for me via my phone. That’s when I looked closer at the email and realised it was a phishing email preying on a sense of urgency by me to resecure my account. That is part one of how the ultra secure password was obtained. Part two was not paying attention to having 2FA switched on: had it been, the password would not have been able to be changed and within minutes I would have booted the scammer and retaken access. This was a failing by myself and others with X accounts in the company, and has been mandated now for all. Even Authenticator type apps are prone to breaches; ultimately only a hardware key like a Yubikey provides the next level of security under such circumstances. I wanted to share this breakdown to make sure others are aware that phishing emails of this nature prey on your sense of urgency and convenience to click the link and not input by yourself independently. The fact Google didn’t filter this email nor the browser flagged the domain as suspicious is unhelpful but no excuse. My advice to everybody is to ensure you have a secure, long password on your account that is not reused elsewhere. Switch on 2FA on the account, and ensure the email associated with the account is also secure.

I know a grand total of 0 people who spend all their time behind a computer & seem happy. If you are struggling, I can tell you the solution is not more screen time. Close the laptop, spend time w/ others, find hobbies, grab a part time job. Live like a human, not a robot!

This is what happens when people treat crypto like a casino, with these shortsighted trends we’ve been seeing, expecting instant giga gains from shit coins and ponzis many people keep parroting on here only to over invest in a bag of hot air. (I am also guilty of this in some ways ofc) For every winner there are many losers, but the social media vacuum is blinding. Just as it is important to know how to celebrate a win, you need to know how to accept a loss or a missed opportunity … especially when there are so many more opportunities on the horizon.
