@TeArawa1971 @Tiare_MP @rackbert_one Yeah I wondered if he meant forever or in the situation at that time... things have changed a bit. I'm not defending Max, he just advocated for one way of organising a system that at that time seemed appropriate (end of an era with a lot of capacity and low demand growth)

@njedwards19651 @Tiare_MP Your not comparing the same price, you need to add transmission to the smelter price

@Tiare_MP @rackbert_one Energy is not something that changes in one term, it takes longer than that to build something. This is why politics results in stupid... because we change the priorities every 3 years

@hydropowerguy Supplier of quite specialised material handling equipment (don’t want to dox them). Referring to who would be ‘plant engineer’ doing detailed design of balance-of-plant outside of core equipment and material handling.

Supplier: which engineering firm are you working with. Me: lemme reverse the question on you. Which engineering firms attract a ‘pain-in-the-ass’ up charge? Supplier: [list of NZ consulting engineering firms] up charge numbers from 10-30% Me: 👀👀👀👀 Ok well none of them.

@MikeySmithNZ 95% of everything we do is waste, learn the 8 wastes, reduce them as much as possible. People are naturally wasteful and that is what hurts their productivity.

I feel like "productivity" is a strange argument either way. Humans are naturally productive, it's normal for a human to want to figure out how to do something easier, faster, create a result with as little work as possible. Saying the govt can fix productivity can only really be one thing. Remove regulation so a civilian can run faster towards an end result. What else can a govt do to "increase productivity"?

A record boom in hydro power orders unprecedented in more than 15 years has manufacturing nearing capacity just as the equipment installed in the previous energy boom of the 1960/70s reaches end of life....andritz.com/newsroom-en/ne…

@matt_horncastle Some European countries I've been in you can see an emergency doctor within 10 minutes and be xrayed and discharged (after being seen by doctor again) in less than hour. It's just NZ cannot understand what it takes to be properly equipped, staffed and efficient.

The cold efficiency of every aspect of the Austrian approach to community infrastructure is frankly amazing. Yeah their taxes are high, but seems that their tax money gets to where it needs to go, not pointless climate conferences and other political bs. How do they do it?

@philinv @dbseymour Yeah but you all miss the point, small island with not enough power storage in a dry year and a gas supply that is running out far faster than predicted. Firm energy projects are in short supply (yes that's not wind or solar)

Watching the economically illiterate Chloe Swarbrick try and challenge @dbseymour , a qualified electrical engineer, on power prices and energy company structure, is something to behold .

@MatthewWithy We either win big on high temp geothermal, build Onslow or a similar alternative, or pay to refurbish Huntley or build something suited to our brown coal

Seemingly I’m the only person who actually read that OECD report. As you might expect from the vanilla squares at the OECD it recommends lots of ‘market led, government supported’ investments. Surprisingly (based on the coverage) an LNG terminal was a very minor mention.

Best thing about German machinery manufacturers They tell you if you are doing something dumb. If you can handle it, it’s super valuable.

I've been searching for the canonical case of 'high electricity prices killed them' as it seems to be the received wisdom thats happening a lot these days. Examples are frankly.... thin.
