Summary of my presentation at the Directors of Improvement conference today. (Strap in, it's a bit of a beast) ↓

For living without control God, I come to you as I am. It is all I have, really. And the next one I’m conscious of will be the same. I can feel the way I move, moment to moment, without the comfort of “solutions.” It seems wild to me now how I imagined any once-and-for-all cure for this, or a master plan to ensure things will work out. But, truth be told, that’s always been my secret hope. So, Lord, let’s try again. I’m begging for a new plan. I want a plan that is an “unplan.” I must keep moving and planning, trying and changing, knitting my days together even as they unravel. So can we do this together? Remind me to pray: come Lord and quiet the worry. I step, and you steady me. I give, and you keep my hands open. I act, and you fortify me with courage to try and try and try again. This life is uncertain, Lord, but your love is not. You tell the story of my life regardless of how little I know about how it ends, except to say, you were there since the beginning and you appear on every page.

You know what makes me angry? When I admit a patient with metastatic cancer who’s unlikely to survive… and if that patient had been able to access a family doctor and simple routine screening tests they would have been most likely cured months ago. Now it’s too late. This happens far too often. Not being able to access care sooner is absolutely killing people. It happens over and over again. It’s pretty pathetic for the billions of dollars we spend on healthcare.

@LShalott As someone who has recently been where you are (and still recovering) may I recommend The Sleep Coach on YouTube and his app BedTyme. It has really helped me and many, many others. The app has been worth the $ to me. Praying for you!

The long hours overnight when it’s just me and my thoughts and palpitations and twitches are so mentally challenging. Trying to stay positive and repeat scripture and affirmations, but it’s so hard. God, be near. Be my strength, refuge, and rescue.

Please keep praying for me. Things are really bad. Anxiety is fueling the insomnia, and my mind just can’t turn off, and the muscle twitches and racing heart make it so hard. Pray that God would calm all of this, give me hope, give me sleep. Lord, in Your mercy.

@theVogelman @JoshKunnath I offered reassessments so students were not caught in the “later learning penalty box” but they didn’t always have time to take me up on it because they were busy trying to learn new material. No system is perfect but it’s good to talk about possible solutions!

@hyoungth @JoshKunnath I was thinking the same thing Heidi. I’m all for better grading, but in most classes if each of those assessments is summative, they are each covering different ground, right? Or are two and three reassessments in this scenario?

Problems w/ using the mean (average) to calculate a score for a skill that has been assessed multiple times: -students are punished for taking longer to learn -students are rewarded if they begin class at a higher level -the grade isn't a representation of their current learning

@JoshKunnath Unless the assessments are for different areas of learning. Rarely, in my HS classroom when I was teaching math and bio, did the second assessment cover the same material as the first. I’m not a fan of using only the mean, but it isn’t always a case of “punishing later learning.”

… But if the purpose of grades is to communicate the most recent evidence of student learning, then (mean) averaging of multiple pieces of evidence of a single standard is usually ineffective, inaccurate, & unfair.
