This #ISTE18 Ignite evolved in the weeks since I originally wrote it. Thank you to those who watched and supported. ⬇️ These are My Confessions of A First Year Computer Science Teacher. .@i3algebra, who teaches computer science to an all boys school, says “What if I’m the girl? What if I am ‘the girl’ that teaches them computer science?” 👏 #ISTE18

@MamaDoctorJones @hankgreen I lived with painful periods and low iron for too long because I was still considered to be in the range of normal and the nurses screening messages were dismissive. It wasn’t normal to me. Being able to communicate with my doctor directly very likely saved my life and my liver.

I would like to make a video called "how to speak doctor" on things that are a little different between doctor communication and normal human communication.

@SeeAverageWoman @NicholasFerroni I just switched to a curriculum development role in private sector and the biggest transition for me is how much freedom I have to plan my day and what is considered “work.” Mental breaks are part of work. Work/Life balance isn’t just outside the workday, it happens throughout.

@NicholasFerroni A lot of private sector friends readily admit there’s mental downtime in their day. A teacher day has very little. We are on at max mental effort the entire time. That is also a huge factor.

@jzux I started seeing a therapist as part of processing/healing after I was assaulted during a massage. After a month, she fired ME because she didn’t want to be called to appear in court as a witness for my mental state. She said it takes too much time and it’s inconvenient. 🎻🎻🎻

Math teachers, please consider what you mean if you are modeling and teaching kids to "cancel." Do you mean "divide to 1?" Or "add (sum) to 0?" "Canceling" is neither an operation nor a result.

@alicekeeler This year, I am focusing on individual concept mastery. I don’t calculate a percent and I don’t total the points. Each problem is looked at on its own and there is a conversation. That’s where the learning happens. If a kid feels like a failure, that’s on us.

My son does not think he is good at math. Low scores do not encourage students, it discourages them. Low scores are not motivating.

@TRyanGregory The “without paying them more” is silent in that question. Missouri DOE sent out a survey asking for feedback on how to get more teachers into the field? Didn’t see a box for “pay them more” and “show them professional respect”. It’s laughable.

"If the pay and working conditions are so bad, why don't teachers and nurses just quit?" *Teachers and nurses quit in droves* "Why aren't there enough teachers and nurses?!? How can we get more?!?"

@LisaAnnWalter @AbbottElemABC In my mind they use the teachers’ lounge as an actual lounge on set. I refuse to believe otherwise and this confirms it. Also, happy birthday. What a wonderful staff to share your days with!

@jedipadmaster As a former IEP case manager (and now advocate within gen ed), I’m interested as none of this sounds like what an IEP meeting is for. Let me know if you need any reviewers or if you just want to talk through it.
