This is one of the most deft non-apology apologies I’ve ever seen. “ thank you for your feedback about the opportunity to have been blah blah blah.” I don’t think I’ll ever use it, but it was pretty slick.

When did major ass kissing become a requirement to ask for a letter of recommendation? I have been fielding requests and they all are preceded by a (seemingly insincere) paragraph of how wonderful I am and how valuable my class was to them. Gross.

@DrLMRobinson I was on a committee long ago and we did look at the grades. One applicant had a poor grade in a study abroad. We wondered out loud, who gets a poor grade in study abroad?

@i_tenure A third option is irrelevant advice from a very different type of job. We're being turned down when we offer $120k postdoc positions because they can make more elsewhere with a permanent position. Yet, I see folks discussing grad pay in terms of asst profs starting at <$100k.

There are a lot fewer faculty and a lot more vice presidents than there were when I started this job.

Does anyone else get really worn down in the spring? At my old job with the unreasonable work expectations, I literally had a mental health break down every year in spring. My work expectations are more reasonable now, so I’m still healthy. Just damn tired.

Today I agreed to come in on a Saturday morning to meet a student for a project. Student was 1.25 hours late. I told them directly 1.25 hours is a long time to wait for you on a Saturday morning. At least they were contrite.

This year I worked over the summer and we got a raise at my state uni. I’m going to close out the year nearly DOUBLE the salary I had at my previous SLAC. DOUBLE.

@Hobopower3 So we had a big talk. They don’t feel fully supported by the department so they have another job. They’re trying to keep a lot of balls in the air and come from a culture of pride where they are very reluctant to talk to their professors about their problems.
