Nigeria: A young Christian in Barkin Ladi, Plateau State, was arrested for protecting his community with a rudimentary firearm. Heavily armed Islamists, meanwhile, have repeatedly and recently attacked vulnerable Christian communities across Plateau State – including Barkin Ladi. The Islamists openly carry AK-47s, though they are never arrested or disarmed – only Christians are. The military has proven unable or unwilling to protect Christians. I was on a train in Tokyo. We stopped between stations. Announcement in Japanese, then in English: "We apologize for the delay. We will resume shortly." The delay was maybe 3 minutes. Not a big deal. When the train started moving again, another announcement: "We sincerely apologize for the delay. We were stopped for 3 minutes and 20 seconds. This is unacceptable. Thank you for your patience." Three minutes and twenty seconds. They measured it exactly. And called it unacceptable. When I got off at my stop, there were station staff on the platform bowing and handing out delay certificates. I took one out of curiosity. It was an official document stating that the train had been delayed by 3 minutes and 20 seconds, signed and stamped. The staff member said in English "for your employer. So they know the delay was not your fault." I said I'm a tourist, I don't need it. He looked confused. "But the delay affected you. You deserve an apology." Three minutes. They were treating a three-minute delay like a major incident. Later I mentioned this to a Japanese friend. They said "oh yes, delay certificates are normal. Trains are supposed to be exactly on time. If they are late, they must apologize." I said three minutes isn't late, it's nothing. My friend said "in Japan, three minutes is late. On time means on time. Not approximately on time." They said the train company probably investigated why there was a 3-minute delay. "They will find the cause and fix it so it doesn't happen again." I kept the certificate. It's framed in my apartment now. A reminder that somewhere in the world, people care about three minutes. © 6IX.

Haha! This is true. I am currently writing about my uncle, who died some years back. All the beautiful things I am saying about him now, I never quite said to him when he was alive. And now that he is dead, I find a strange comfort, a peculiar freedom even, in pouring those sweet words over his memory. I like to think the reason this is so is because the dead can no longer reject our tenderness. The living are complicated. They can laugh at our sincerity, misunderstand our intentions, grow uncomfortable beneath the weight of our affection, or simply fail to respond in the way we secretly hope they will. And because of that possibility, we ration our love. We hold back compliments. We swallow gratitude. We postpone confessions of admiration for a more convenient time that, more often than not, never comes. Death removes all of that. The dead cannot interrupt you. They cannot dismiss your words. They cannot look away in embarrassment or return your vulnerability with indifference. They lie still and receive everything you should have said when they were here to hear it. And so the heart, relieved of the fear of awkwardness and unmet expectation, finally opens.

What I find most irritating out here is the unprovoked slut shaming. If a lady shares pictures of herself having a good time, minding her business, just chilling, you’ll leave your wife, call out of work, grab your phone to start calling them prostitutes. If a man shares his wedding pictures, you lose your senses! You still find a way to attack the woman with name calling. What is the problem? Did your mother not hug you enough? Should people quit social media for you? Is your marriage so miserable that the only thing that gives you joy is stalking and slut-shaming women, but your wife, mum, aunt, sisters and cousins are off limits? Do you people realize how uncomfortable you make strangers out here? It takes a lot to live a double life in plain sight.
